Statistically speaking, flying is actually one of the safest ways to travel — you’re much, much more likely to die in a car accident, for example — but you wouldn’t know it from the number of movies that involve horrible things happening aboard an airplane. The latest of these is 7500, a paranormal thriller from The Grudge helmer Takashi Shimizu. Ryan Kwanten, Amy Smart, Jerry Ferrara, Leslie Bibb, and Jamie Chung star as passengers and crew en route from Los Angeles to Tokyo when they begin to notice odd occurrences within the cabin. Steve Carell‘s been doing quite well for himself in his post-Office career. He’s already got several films lined up for the next couple of years, including Bennett Miller’s Foxcatcher and the magician comedy Burt Wonderstone. Now the latest addition to his slate is Conviction, a heist film which he’ll produce and star in. Jonathan Herman‘s Black List script centers around a convicted bank robber who’s forced by the FBI to entrap his former protege.
Which sounds good, except that while Herman’s original screenplay had a tone similar to Heat, it’s now being reworked as an action comedy in the vein of 48 Hours or Ocean’s Eleven. That seems like a pretty major shift, though without having read the script I can’t say for certain whether it’s a terrible idea. The project has yet to confirm a writer to draft a new version of the script. [Deadline]

Director Joe Lynch and his star-studded cast took over Comic-Con’s Hall H Saturday afternoon for a panel on their upcoming horror-comedy film, Knights of Badassdom. The Con-friendly story revolves around a group of LARPers who accidentally summon a real succubus from Hell. The cast list, too, sounds practically tailor-made for Comic-Con: True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten, Community‘s Danny Pudi, Game of Thrones‘ Peter Dinklage, Firefly‘s Summer Glau, Mad Men‘s Michael Gladis, and 24‘s Jimmi Simpson, plus Margarita Levieva (Adventureland) and Steve Zahn (who was not present at the panel).
The event included the brand new trailer for the film (embedded below) and a clip from the movie, as well as a discussion and Q&A with Lynch and the cast. Read details on the panel and watch the trailer after the jump.

The Amazing Spider-Man isn’t the only big Hall H movie that the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly blows the door off. They’ve also got your first look at The Knights of Badassdom, which will also be wooing audiences in the biggest room at San Diego Comic-Con next week. From the looks of these first images, it shouldn’t have much of a problem. The film features the stars of Comic-Con favorites like Firefly (Summer Glau), True Blood (Ryan Kwanten), Community (Danny Pudi) and Game of Thrones (Peter Dinklage) and tells the story of a group of live-action role players whose fantasy becomes reality. Sounds like the right blend of ingredients for a Comic-Con hit.

Charles Manson has been portrayed on film many times, and the Manson Family has had more than a few cinematic representations, too. But The Machinist writer Scott Kosar has been working on a script called The Family, which he intends as a biopic — in fact, the definitive biopic — of the Manson Family. He’s preparing to direct the film as well, and has Ryan Kwanten set to star. Read More »
Red Hill takes a classic small thriller concept — a few lawmen trying to hold off an aggressive criminal — and looks as if it infuses it with some Western influence and maybe a little touch of noir. Bring in some great cinematography and True Blood‘s Ryan Kwanten as a wounded officer just looking for the quiet life, and you just might have something. Read More »
Add Cleopatra to the list of subjects that are being developed by multiple producers at once. A new biography of Cleopatra, by Stacy Schiff, is about to be published, and Michael Pietsch of Little, Brown says that Scott Rudin has picked up the rights to the book (he actually bought the rights years ago, before the book was even written) and is working with Angelina Jolie to develop a movie from the material. Right now, the idea is that Jolie would play Cleopatra, as if that needs to be explained.
Note that this isn’t Cleo, Steven Soderbergh‘s proposed 3D musical about Cleopatra with music by Robert Pollard and Guided by Voices. Totally different projects. Soderbergh’s is basically backburnered, as he put it off when Moneyball fell into his lap and hasn’t come back into the frame in the wake of his ouster from the baseball picture. Doubt anyone will be surprised when I say I still really hope Soderbergh somehow makes his first, as unlikely as that is. [USA Today]
