At this point we’ve seen a lot from Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim, but with a couple weeks left before the film opens, why not one more trailer? (Here’s why: the film needs more of a guaranteed audience than it already has, and so Warner Bros. and Legendary are trying to show people what this one is.)

This extended 2-minute TV spot features a longer version of the “apocalypse” speech from Idris Elba, and a more detailed presentation of the launch sequence for the giant robot Jaegers, too. There are some other flashes of new footage, along with a quiet, fearful audio track that goes for tense breaths rather than big “braaaaahm!” noises. There’s good stuff here, though I almost would have preferred to wait for the full film to see a few of these shots. Read More »

In March 2012, I visited the Toronto set of Pacific Rim — you can read my full report here. While on set we talked with director Guillermo del Toro and various members of the cast. We posted our interview with Guillermo earlier this week, and today we bring you our on set chat with Ron Perlman, who plays a character named Hannibal Chau, the head of a group of scavengers who get to Kaiju remains first and sell pieces of the corpses on the black market. While Ron is only a supporting character, he tends to steal the screen whenever he appears. After the jump you can read a transcript of our entire roundtable conversation with Perlman.

Pacific Rim

I visited the Toronto set of Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim on March 28th 2012. While on set, we toured the art room, watched filming, saw a bunch of the sets, and interviewed Guillermo and some of the cast. You’ll be able to read those transcripts over the next week on the site, but after the jump you can read a writeup of over 80 things I learned on set (3,685 words worth, and this is one really worth reading) alongside a video blog I recorded with Steve from Collider giving our thoughts on what we had seen.

The concept of Pacific Rim seems like the simplest thing ever. Humans pilot giant robots to battle giant alien monsters. However, Warner Bros. is dead set on letting audiences know there’s much more to it than that. In the latest trailer for the Guillermo del Toro sci-fi action film, the focus is squarely on the history and mythology created for the film. (With plenty of new shots of massive destruction and fighting along the way.) Read More »

Guillermo Del Toro took the stage at WonderCon 2013 and received a hero’s welcome. Ever since he wowed audiences at San Diego Comic-Con 2012 with the first footage form his upcoming film, Pacific Rim, we’ve been happily devouring any image or information we could get on the film pitting giant Jaeger robots against giant Kaiju monsters. But after that panel, and after the insane trailers that have been released online, how was Del Toro going to top his presentation?

He did it by showing a brand new, WonderCon (and CinemaCon)-exclusive trailer featuring footage that proves we have no idea how big things are going to get on July 12. I’m talking shots in space, I’m talking “2,500 tons of awesome,” and a 25-story robot dragging an oil liner along the street and then swinging it like a baseball bat. Read much more below. Cool Posts From Around the Web:

Here’s the first trailer for Guillermo del Toro‘s “giant monsters versus giant robots” film Pacific Rim. We’ve seen blueprints of the robots, and an early bit of video showing a monster attack, but unless you were at Comic Con you haven’t seen anything like this footage yet.

While I wasn’t as bowled over at Comic Con as some other people were, this is pushing every button for me right now. The scope, the details, even the GLaDOS appearance/homage. (I can see why people might not like that detail, as it creates a distracting intersection with Portal, but right now I love it.)

Pacific Rim looks like the movie that many others have tried and failed to make, from Emmerich’s Godzilla (a big failure) to Bay’s Transformers series, which got closer. I hope Guillermo del Toro’s effort works as well as a whole, as this trailer does in a couple minutes.
