We’ll very likely see another film featuring Chris Hemsworth’s Huntsman character from Snow White and the Huntsman, but the precise details of that SWATH sequel seem up in the air. A small part of the uncertainty around that project is due to the public and embarrassing affair between Snow White director Rupert Sanders and his star Kristen Stewart. It’s a thing I hate even mentioning, because it should have nothing to do with anything other than their lives, but in this case it seems to be having some ripples in the film business as well.

So there’s another big project that Universal wants to get moving: the new version of Van Helsing that has Tom Cruise attached to star and Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (Cowboys & Aliens, The Amazing Spider-Man 2) scripting. And it’s starting to look like we might see Sanders stepping in to direct that film, with the potential Snow White and the Huntsman sequel going to another director. Read More »

Sorry Kirsten Dunst, you’re the latest to be replaced in Sony/Columbia’s Spider-Man series. With Marc Webb confirmed to return as director for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, the studio is moving forward with casting for the film, and there are a couple big reveals today.

One is that Electro is rumored as “one of the villains” under consideration for the sequel. The other is that Mary Jane Watson, played by Dunst in Sam Raimi’s films, is definitely going to appear. And Shailene Woodley (The Descendants) is the likely choice to play her. Read More »

When Universal first remade The Mummy with Brendan Fraser in the late ’90s, the franchise retained the period setting of the original film. That ended up being the right decision as the remade Mummy franchise spawned multiple sequels, spin-offs and was a runaway hit at almost every turn. It has since gone cold, however, and with the help of producers Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Prometheus co-writer Jon Spaihts, Universal hope to breathe life into the walking dead one more time.

The trio has now settled on a director to make the movie: Len Wiseman, who recently remade Total Recall with Colin Farrell. This time though, The Mummy will have a modern setting. Read more after the jump. Read More »

Dragons are real and they’re among us. That’s the hook to the children’s book series Dragonology, which Universal bought the rights to in 2008. At that time, screenwriter Leonard Hartman was hired to crack the story of a team of dragonologists – people who study dragons, of course – who try and stop an evil group from turning the world’s remaining dragons on humanity. Nothing came of the project.

Universal has now brought on the in-demand producing team of Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci to oversee the property. The pair will hire a new writer and keep an eye on the script. Kurtzman and Orci are extremely busy these days, recently finishing filming on one movie they wrote, Star Trek 2, another they produced, Ender’s Game, and they are currently writing The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and producing a Van Helsing reboot. Now add Dragonology to the pile.

A script that finds serious studio favor can push a project from long-simmering development into full boil, and that seems to have happened with Sony and The Equalizer. Based on the TV series in which Edward Woodward played a former covert ops expert who donates his services to people in trouble, the film will star Denzel Washington as a new version of the title character.

Richard Wenk recently turned in a new script draft, and Sony likes it enough to push for an April 2013 start date, with a shoot likely to take place in Boston. Some details about the new Equalizer are after the break. Read More »
