In the English language, the phrase Nature Calls has a few different connotations. The title of this film, which recently had its world premiere at SXSW 2012, refers to men going into the woods to become men. The woods, Earth, nature is calling them for something greater. However, the more appropriate connotation would be when the phrase refers to someone going to the bathroom. Because that’s more akin to what the film is.
Written and directed by Todd Rohal, Nature Calls stars Patton Oswalt as a Boy Scout enthusiast who takes a group of reluctant Scouts into the woods to try and revitalize his dying troop, only to be chased down by his anti-Scout brother, played by Johnny Knoxville. It also stars Rob Riggle, Maura Tierny, Darrell Hammond, and the late, great Patrice O’Neal, to whom the film is dedicated. As a huge fan of O’Neal’s, it truly pains me to say these things about the movie, but he would have agreed. Nature Calls is like an animal distracted by a shiny thing. With just ten days left until the release of 21 Jump Street, the marketing folks are ramping up their efforts with an extended red-band trailer that clocks in at nearly five minutes. Some of it is stuff we’ve already seen in the previous trailers, but there’s a good amount of new stuff as well, including trippy, drug-induced hallucinations and Channing Tatum miming a lightsaber fight with his teen nerd crew. The cast of Stuart Zicherman‘s A.C.O.D. just keeps getting better. Mary Elizabeth Winstead has just joined Adam Scott, Richard Jenkins, and Jane Lynch in the comedy, which centers around around thirtysomething Carter (Scott). When his younger brother gets engaged, Carter must try and keep the peace between his long-divorced parents lest they ruin the wedding. Winstead is set to play Lauren Stinger, Carter’s supportive longtime girlfriend.
Winstead drew raves at Sundance earlier this year for her turn in James Ponsoldt’s Smashed, and has A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter due out later this year. [Deadline]

Now that her hit Disney series Wizards of Waverly Place has come to an end, Selena Gomez has been trying to make the transition into non-Disney movies with projects ranging from last year’s Monte Carlo to the upcoming Harmony Korine-directed Spring Breakers. The latest addition to her slate is The Sky is Everywhere, an adaptation of Jandy Nelson‘s YA romance of the same title. Gomez will produce the film through her shingle July Moon, developing it as a star vehicle for herself.
The plot follows Lennie, an introverted band geek who’s used to being overshadowed by her much more outgoing older sister Bailey. When Bailey suddenly dies, however, Lennie struggles to cope and soon finds herself torn between two guys: her dead sister’s boyfriend Toby and a charismatic, musically gifted new boy named Joe. The teen love triangle is nothing new, but the book’s received pretty good reviews; if the film version actually brings some nuance to the tearjerker premise, it could be a chance for Gomez to show what she can do. Though it’s being touted as a remake of the ’80s TV series starring Johnny Depp, anyone with even a passing familiarity with the source material will recognize that Phil Lord and Chris Miller‘s upcoming action-comedy 21 Jump Street has little in common with its predecessor.
No, the real draw of the action-comedy so far looks to be in the surprisingly lively chemistry between leads Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum — and accordingly, two new bits of marketing from Columbia highlight just that. After the jump, check out a new trailer in which the pair team up to break all the rules spelled out by their supervising officer (Ice Cube) and a poster that shows off the two guys making the cutest prom couple ever.

The new 21 Jump Street obviously doesn’t have a whole lot in common with the ’80s series it’s based on, aside from than the basic premise (undercover cops posing as high-schoolers) and an appearance by the still-dreamy Johnny Depp. So it’s probably not fair to judge it as an adaptation of the TV show. On its own merits, though, it appears to be a pretty decent buddy cop action-comedy. Last week’s red-band trailer made me laugh, and this week’s green-band trailer did as well. Probably because it’s mostly the same thing, only with less profanity.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum star as a pair of supposedly youthful-looking cops who get assigned to a certain “cancelled undercover program from the ’80s,” as their boss (Nick Offerman) puts it. Watch the SFW version of the trailer after the jump.

Here’s the trailer for The Lorax, the CGI animated adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. The story describes a budding industrialist, the Once-ler, who destroys a small ecosystem in order to make and sell his invention, the theed, a thing that everyone needs. In doing so he meets the disapproval of the Lorax, who speaks for the trees.
In the book and original 1972 animated version, a boy finds the Once-ler and provides our window into the story. He was just a boy who wandered up to the Once-ler’s home, but in this film the boy seems to have a much more active role, and the trailer spends about half its time with him before introducing the Once-ler, voiced by Ed Helms, and the Lorax, gruffly voiced by Danny DeVito. Patton Oswalt is set to take his biggest film role since starring in Big Fan in an as-yet untitled comedy from Todd Rohal, director of The Catechism Cataclysm. The new film (“an outlandish yet poignant comedy,” says the press release) will feature Oswalt and Johnny Knoxville as “a pair of battling brothers who attempt to honor their ailing father by taking a troop of boys on a last ditch camping trip that goes wildly wrong.” Read More »
