The teaser trailer for Rio 2 follows a well-established pattern: throw away the story, and just give the audience some cute, dancing animals. That works for quite a few family films, but in Rio’s case it is more appropriate than most. This is the sequel to a musical about colorful birds that was heavily influenced by the culture of Brazil, after all. So this teaser gets the idea of the sequel across pretty well: it’s Rio, again. After Anne Hathaway picks up her statue for Best Supporting Actress (Nate Silver said it would happen, so it must be true), she’ll be heading to the sunny beaches of Brazil. Or at least, she’ll be heading to a recording booth where she’ll pretend to be on the sunny beaches of Brazil.
Fox announced today that Hathaway will reprise her role for Rio 2, along with most of her Rio co-stars including Jesse Eisenberg, Jemaine Clement, will.i.am, Tracy Morgan, and George Lopez. They’ll joined by several new cast members as well, including Andy Garcia, Kristin Chenoweth, Bruno Mars, and Janelle Monáe. Learn more about the casting and plot details after the jump.

- SpongeBob SquarePants 2 hires Kung Fu Panda 2 writers
- Jesse Eisenberg looks forward to voicing Blu again for Rio 2
- Ashley Bell promises Last Exorcism 2 is “scarier than the first”
- Watch a (very) brief new clip from Paranormal Activity 4

Sequels! Everyone loves them. That is, if we define ‘everyone’ as studio and production executives who don’t like to take risks, and so are prone to throwing money at new projects that are recognizably related to old projects that have already made money. That particular ‘everyone’ really, really likes sequels. 2012 won’t be any different from most of the last ten years, in that a great many sequels will go before cameras during the coming months.
So, just like the title says, after the break you’ll find some minor updates on:
- Captain America 2
- Iron Man 3
- Terminator 5
- J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek sequel,
- and a sequel to the 2011 animated film Rio.
