It’s a strange world. Nicolas Winding Refn‘s film Pusher was released in 1996 and didn’t make a big splash. Years later, when Refn was in dire financial straights he made two sequels, and the attention given to those films helped establish Refn in a much bigger way. Now he’s an internationally famous director and there are two remakes of Pusher out in the world.
The more recent one, the US release for which is yet to be determined, is actually produced by Refn, directed by Luis Prieto and stars Richard Coyle as a guy who finds himself on the wrong end of a bad drug deal and has to make some questionable decisions to survive.
A trailer has just landed for Prieto’s remake, and you can check it out below. Read More »

“The first casualty of war is innocence. Oops, the truth. I meant the first casualty of war is always the truth.”
Here’s the first trailer for Renny Harlin‘s 5 Days of War, which covers people trying to cover the war that broke out between Russia and Georgia in 2008. Serious topics aren’t exactly in the director’s wheelhouse; he’s best known for sequels (Die Hard 2, Nightmare on Elm St. 4) and the occasionally effective action movie (The Long Kiss Goodnight, Cliffhanger).
So I’ve been interested to see what comes of this slightly more serious project since it was announced in 2009. Harlin’s facility with action is certainly on display in this trailer, and I can’t really tell whether or not to have any expectations beyond that. Check it out below and make your own call. After a bit of delay in finding a distributor, Madonna‘s second directorial effort W.E. has a home at The Weinstein Company. Moreover, the Weinsteins plan to release the picture sometime in 2011 — a last-minute calendar addition that could mean one of two things. Either the movie has actual awards potential, or The Weinstein Company needs a movie, now, that can fill some space in November. Read More »

Piranha 3DD has one more potential victim: Katrina Bowden, who plays the equally tiny, hot and self-absorbed assistant Cerie on 30 Rock, is now part of the cast. I don’t think I need to run down all the obvious potential perks of this casting for fans of her character on that show. I mean, we don’t need to get all lascivious here. But yes, she’ll be better to look at than David Koechner. The film also features Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, and Clu Gulager, and is shooting now in North Carolina. Still waiting to hear about the porn starlets that will be cast; Piranha has a reputation to maintain, after all.
After the break, the rather inexplicable remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s great crime movie Pusher gets a remake cast, and an endorsement from Mr Refn. Read More »
