Animation house Laika only has two completed features to its name, but thanks to the strength of those two outings (Coraline and ParaNorman), it’s already earned a reputation for unusually smart, creative family fare. Now they’re joining forces with Focus Features a third time for The Boxtrolls, an adaptation of Alan Snow‘s book Here Be Monsters!
Open Season co-director Anthony Stacchi and Coraline/ParaNorman story artist Graham Annable are teaming to direct, with an excellent voice cast that includes Ben Kingsley, Toni Collette, Elle Fanning, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan, Jared Harris (Mad Men) and Isaac Hempstead-Wright (Game of Thrones). Hit the jump for more details.

With just two days til its July 27 premiere, The Watch director Akiva Schaffer has pushed out one last red-band trailer. Or maybe it’s a blooper reel. However you want to categorize it, it may actually be one of the funnier bits of marketing that have come out for the movie.
Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, Vince Vaughn, and Richard Ayoade star as a quartet of suburban guys whose neighborhood watch group is mostly just an excuse for them to get out of the house and engage in some quality male bonding. (That’s the case for three of the guys, at least.)
When they discover that aliens are secretly taking over their town, however, it falls upon this bumbling group to save the day. Watch the (NSFW for language) video after the jump.

The phrase “When it rains it pours” applies to a lot of things and movie trailers tend to be one of them. So far today we’ve had The Avengers and Piranha 3DD. Now there’s Neighborhood Watch, which aspires to be one of the summer’s biggest comedies. It stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, Billy Crudup, Richard Ayoade and more.
Directed by Akiva Schaffer (Hot Rod) and written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (Superbad), the film follows “a handful of suburban dads who end up over their heads when their time-killing neighborhood safety group uncovers a dangerous plot that is beyond what they expected to deal with.”
The 20th Century Fox film will be released July 27 and you can get your first look at it now. Read More »

I enjoyed his debut feature Submarine enough that I would’ve been looking forward to Richard Ayoade‘s next effort no matter what it wound up being, but his sophomore project is already shaping up to be every bit as interesting as his first. Jesse Eisenberg was cast in the lead role last summer, and it’s now been announced that rising star Mia Wasikowska will be joining him as well. The film is baed on a classic novella by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, with a script by Ayoade and Avi Korine (Harmony’s brother). More details after the jump.

Lonely Island member Akiva Schaffer wrapped the Atlanta shoot for Neighborhood Watch not long ago, and here are the first pics from the film. The movie features Richard Ayoade (The IT Crowd, director of Submarine), Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, and Jonah Hill in a story about a handful of suburban dads who end up over their heads when their time-killing neighborhood safety group uncovers a dangerous plot that is beyond what they expected to deal with. Olivia Wilde has landed the coveted role of ’70s supermodel Suzy Miller in Rush, Ron Howard‘s Peter Morgan-scripted drama about the real-life rivalry between British Formula One driver James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) and Austrian racer Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). Miller married the womanizing Hunt, but then fell in love with Hunt’s friend Richard Burton. Burton agreed to pay the $1 million divorce settlement that Hunt owned Miller, and then married Miller.
Howard is reportedly eyeing Russell Crowe to play the supporting role of Burton, but it doesn’t sound like negotiations are too far along at this time. Rush began preliminary shooting last month, but real principal photography is starting soon. [Deadline]
After the jump, Billy Crudup gets to show off his comedic chops while Helen Hunt, Maggie Grace, and Aaron Paul get to fight breast cancer.

Denzel Washington has reportedly been offered the lead role in the English-language remake of The Secret in Their Eyes, which is being helmed by Billy Ray (Shattered Glass). The original Argentinian version, by director Juan José Campanella, was a critical success that won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Picture in 2010. In other words, no wonder someone in Hollywood’s decided to try and make it all over again.
The dramatic thriller centers around a retired criminal court investigator turned would-be novelist who’s struggling to get over a murder case and a romance that have haunted him for decades. Campanella’s film won raves for its unpredictable plotting, impressive camerawork, and excellent performances. I don’t think the American version sounds bad, so much as just pointless — but if it has to get remade, I suppose there are worse choices than Ray and Washington. [First Showing]
After the jump, Will Forte joins Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn in Neighborhood Watch, and Isla Fisher lands magician heist flick Now You See Me.
