Sony has been developing a Marvel Comics spin-off of the Spider-Man villain Venom for some time now, but I never actually believed it would happen. Screenwriting team Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese had written two drafts on the character before moving on to Zombieland. And before Wernick/Reese, the company had previously commissioned Jacob Estes (Mean Creek) to pen a take. It seemed like one of those projects that was just doomed to development heck. Zombieland is unlike any one film you’ve ever seen before. Sure, it’s about a group of people trying to survive after the zombie apocalypse, but it isn’t exactly a horror movie. You will laugh your ass off, but the movie is very different than the comedy-focused horror film Shaun of the Dead. The trailers and commercials are very action-centric, but the core of the film is a buddy relationship road trip adventure. When I was on the set of Zombieland a few months ago, screenwriters/producers Paul Wenick and Rhett Reese told me about a new project they were working on called Earth vs. Moon. At the time, the screenwriting duo has just turned in a first draft and were waiting to hear back. The project was in the very early stages of development. Burt now we have an update.

While on the set of Zombieland, I had a chance to sit down and chat with writers/producers Paul Wenick and Rhett Reese in a round-table style interview. They talk about the television origins of the project, zombies in an amusement park, a meeting with John Carpenter, Horror comedies, Zombie rules, for the love of Twinkies, possible sequel or television series, the music of the film, writing the Venom spin-off movie for Marvel, Earth vs. Moon, improv on set, The Joe Schmo Show and writing action scenes.
