There’s almost too much that’s good about Fantastic Fest: experiencing the Alamo Drafthouse for a week straight; the small, friendly, film fan atmosphere; the parties. Oh yeah, then there’s the insane films. Every year Fantastic Fest is filled with a ton of wild genre flicks that either you’ve never heard of yet or already have a lot of buzz surrounding them. As the 2011 festival is set to kick off this week, /Film will be on the ground telling you about the sickest, most disturbing and exciting films playing in Austin, Texas. Before that though, since there’s so much that’s good about Fantastic Fest, we’ve got three lists to get you as excited:

I’ve always been a fan of the closed-room thriller — muster up some courage, and stick a couple/few actors in a room and watch what happens. That’s essentially the structure of Retreat, which first-timer Carl Tibbetts directed from his own script. The film stars Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton as a couple who are taking a little time away from the world on a remote island. But when Jamie Bell, an unexpected addition to their getaway, arrives with an apocalyptic tale of disaster in the world at large, things get bad.

Sony picked up US rights not long ago — there is no release date yet — and now there is a Cannes sales trailer kicking around. Check it out below. Read More »

The Farrelly Brothers start shooting their new film Hall Pass in Atlanta this week, and the cast just got an injection of additional talent. Stephen Merchant and J.B. Smoove will join Owen Wilson, Jenna Fischer and Jason Sudeikis in the film about two husbands (Wilson and Sudeikis) who are given a free pass to have extra-marital adventures for a week. Still don’t get why the title ‘Hall Pass’ applies, but no matter; Merchant and Smoove are great additions. [THR]
