That dirty wifebeater Channing Tatum is wearing is no coincidence. “I’ve always wanted to do a Die Hard” admitted the actor and in his upcoming action film White House Down, he’s getting that chance. Director Roland Emmerich will once again reign havoc on the White House, this time with the help of John Cale (Tatum), a Secret Service agent who is separated from his daughter when the White House is invaded by a group of mercenaries. It’s an action film in the vein not only of that classic 1988 Bruce Willis movie but The Rock, Air Force One and Emmerich’s own film, Independence Day.
Oddly enough, for a film that takes place largely in Washington D.C. and the World’s most famous residence, filming almost exclusively took place in Montreal, Quebec Canada. In fact, save for a few second unit plates in D.C. and one park scene, all of White House Down will be filmed on stages in Montreal including a place called Mel’s Cite du Cinema. Which is where we were on day 33 of an 82 day shoot, watching Tatum fight on the roof of the White House, destroy a Black Hawk helicopter with a high-tech missile launcher and eventually get thrown over the edge through a huge piece of glass.
It’s September 19, 2012, just six months after James Vanderbilt’s script was purchased by Sony and nine months until the film’s release June 28. Magic Mike may no longer be in theaters, but writer Reid Carolin and star (and real-life inspiration) Channing Tatum are determined to see the enterprising male stripper live on — even if they have to direct the sequel themselves. Or at least that’s the latest rumor going around about Magic Mike 2, based on a short interview the duo gave a German film website.
As for what the next movie will actually entail, the pair reveal that the plotline could see the self-described “cock-rocking kings of Tampa” hitting the road. Read their comments after the jump.

This year, Channing Tatum has certainly made the jump from charming leading man to A-list superstar and now he’s about to make an even bigger jump. On a motorcycle. Over a bunch of cars. He’s going to produce and star in a film about Evel Knievel, the legendary daredevil, being developed with the help of producers Mike DeLuca and Dana Brunetti, who did The Social Network and are also working on 50 Shades of Grey. The one and only time my non-cinephile girlfriends have ever seemed truly jealous of my job is when I mentioned in passing that I’d reviewing Magic Mike. “The male stripper movie!” they exclaimed. “Oh my God, I can’t wait to see that.” The appeal was obvious: Magic Mike promised to dish out cheese, sleaze, and glitter a-plenty, not to mention a hot, heaping dose of mostly naked men (among them Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matthew McConaughey, Matt Bomer, and Joe Mangianello) busting out their best dance moves.
Unfortunately for them, it turns out that Magic Mike is not that movie. Or rather, it is, but only intermittently. The rest of the time, Magic Mike is a Steven Soderbergh drama that just so happens to be set in the world of male stripping. That mostly turns out to be a good thing, although I suspect the guys and gals who come looking for a “male Showgirls,” as one of my pals put it, won’t necessarily agree.

These days, it’s no longer enough for a movie to just succeed by itself on the big screen — if there’s a movie spin-off, theme park attraction, board game, or stage adaptation to possibly be made of it, someone, somewhere is already working on it. Such is the case with Magic Mike, Steven Soderbergh‘s male stripper pic based on the real-life experiences of star Channing Tatum. Although the film itself won’t open for another few days, screenwriter and producer Reid Carolin says they’ve already been cooking up plans for a Broadway run. Hit the jump for details.

Now this is what I’m talking about. Whereas the first U.S. trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s male stripper flick Magic Mike took pains to frame Mike (Channing Tatum) as just a sensitive furniture maker searching for something more than the seedy life of an exotic dancer, the new U.K. trailer plays up the sheer entertainment value of watching these guys get down and dirty. And along the way, it even reveals a bit more about the mentor-protege relationship between Mike and The Kid (Alex Pettyfer) that comprises the main storyline. Watch it after the jump.

Briefly: Steven Soderbergh has already wrapped his movie Magic Mike, which stars Channing Tatum and is based on Tatum’s own youthful experience as a male exotic dancer. Because Soderbergh works fast he’s already got a cut of the film, and Warner Bros. has picked up the movie for distribution next summer. Magic Mike will hit theaters on June 29, 2012, when it will provide counter-programming against G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which also stars Tatum. Read More »
