One of the complaints many people have about the pop culture poster scene is that the same handful of movies keep getting posters. It’s a valid argument. Massively popular films like Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, The Big Lebowski and Kill Bill do have infinitely more posters than their smaller counterparts. The reasons, though, should be obvious. One, these are very popular films with huge fan bases. The more prints that are released, the more fans who can get them. Second, if you don’t love one artist’s interpretation, maybe another will really strike you.

Two films undoubtedly on that list are Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Mondo alone has done about a half dozen posters for Sam Raimi’s trilogy and there are three new ones on sale tomorrow. However, like I said above, these are unique and beautiful takes on the films by artists Randy Ortiz, Richey Beckett and Tom Whalen. Each is radically different from every other take out there and will please fans new and old alike. Look at the new Mondo Evil Dead posters below.  Read More »

Randy Ortiz - Alien 3

In recent months, Mondo struck a deal with 20th Century Fox to make poster for their movies. That’s a very, very healthy backlog of awesome films. So at Comic-Con we saw posters for Predator and Aliens, and with Halloween around the corner, they’re doing a new poster for Ridley Scott‘s Alien. It’s by Randy Ortiz (who did some great recent poster for The Goonies, The Thing and more) and will first be available at 35mm screenings of the film this weekend in Austin, Texas. The two leaders in pop culture art are both releasing excellent new prints on Thursday. First up is Mondo, which is finally releasing an awesome Army of Darkness poster, made by Randy Ortiz for a screening that took place a few weeks back. They’re pairing that with a brand new Evil Dead 2 poster by Jason Edmiston.

Then there’s Gallery 1988, which still has its awesome Bad Robot exhibit on display. With Star Trek Into Darkness coming soon the gallery is releasing a brand new print by Rhys Cooper, featuring Benedict Cumberbatch‘s villainous John Harrison. Check them all out below. Read More »

New York Comic-Con has come and gone, bringing with it big movie news, TV news and lots and lots of collectibles. And while some booths chose to reveal their collectibles in advance, one that didn’t was the crew at Mondo. They preferred to keep their first trip to New York a well-kept secret until the convention opened on Thursday. Once that happened though, fans realized it was worth the wait as the famous poster boutique of the Alamo Drafthouse had brought posters from the Lord of the Rings, The Iron Giant, Shaun of the Dead, Kill Bill, Friday the 13th and more. That’s the good news. The better news is that not everything sold out so they’ll likely be online soon.

After the jump, check out all of Mondo’s New York Comic-Con offerings. Read More »

The Goonies is one of those movies you either grew up with as a child and love unabashedly, or you watched later in life, driven on hype and nostalgia, and it fell short. I’m firmly in the camp of the former – I adore everything about Richard Donner‘s film – and think Randy Ortiz‘s poster captures a lot of that adventure and wonder. Check out the full image below.
