In the decade or so since the start of Fox’s Ice Age series, the franchise has pulled in a range of high-profile stars including Jack Black, Will Arnett, Jay Leno, and Simon Pegg to compliment its central quartet of Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Denis Leary, and Chris Wedge.
This time around, for Steve Martino and Michael Thurmeier‘s Ice Age: Continental Drift, the core characters are joined by the likes of Jennifer Lopez, Nick Frost, Rebel Wilson, Aziz Ansari, Josh Gad, Peter Dinklage, and more. Since the run-up to the release of Blue Sky Studios’ Ice Age in 2002, the best spokesman — spokesanimal? — for the film series has been a creature that can barely speak. The acorn-obsessed Scrat, a sabre-toothed squirrel, has starred in trailers and shorts and is one of the most consistently entertaining parts of the actual films. With the latest film in the series, Ice Age: Continental Drift, hitting theaters in July 2012, Fox and Blue Sky are way ahead of the curve in getting the word out. Sometimes there’s no way to make a casting roundup conform to any sort of sense. Such is the case here, as we’ve got info on a wild reality-based political thriller set in 1979, an animated sequel, and an indie family drama with a very unlikely cast. As if Jeremy Renner doesn’t have enough stuff to do. But hell, the big steaming pile of sequels to the Ice Age films should help someone, so why not a handful of actors? (And animators and loads of technicians, which is also a good thing.) Over the last few years, Disney decided to create live-action reenactments of classic Walt Disney Animated classics using some of Hollywood’s biggest stars.
- The first batch included Rachel Weisz as Snow White, Scarlett Johansson as Cinderella, Beyonce as Alice in Wonderland.
- The second batch included Jessica Biel as Pocahontas, Whoopi Goldberg as the Genie, Jennifer Lopez as Princess Jasmine and Marc Anthony as Aladdin, Tina Fey as Tinker Bell, Gisele Bundchen as Wendy Darling and Mikhail Baryshnikov as Peter Pan.
Disney has decided to create another series of these Dream Portrait Series Ads by photographer Annie Leibovitz.The new set includes Olivia Wilde as the Evil Queen and Alec Baldwin as the spirit of the magic mirror from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Penelope Cruz and Jeff Bridges appear as Belle and the transformed prince recalling the final scene from Beauty and the Beast, and Queen Latifah as Ursula from The Little Mermaid. Offensive, or just offensively unfunny?
The former, according to GLAAD, and the latter, according to me. This is the line that opens the first trailer for Ron Howard‘s upcoming comedy The Dilemma, and it’s caused some controversy amongst those trying to fight against the use of the word ‘gay’ as an openly accepted pejorative. Universal has released a movie trailer for Ron Howard‘s new comedy The Dilemma, which stars Vince Vaughn as a guy who discovers that the wife (Winona Ryder) of his best friend (Kevin James) is cheating on him (with a guy played by Channing Tatum) and is unsure how he should break the news. And, to clear up confusion, The Dilemma was once called What You Don’t Know, and Cheaters before that. Jennifer Connelly also plays the girlfriend of Vaughn’s character. The comedy is written by Allan Loeb, the screenwriter of 21, Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps and The Switch. Looks a bit too generic for my tastes. Watch the trailer now embedded after the jump. Perhaps the least surprising thing about the new trailer for Valentine’s Day is the final card that tells us the film will be released in February. That’s going some, though, because there’s absolutely nothing in the whole thing that will catch you off guard in any way. Judge for yourself, because we have it embedded below the break.
Is this familiarity a crippling thing though? The movie is certainly a star studded affair and seems to have lots of comic situations and broad scope for complex romantic entanglements. Those are the generic requirements for a picture like this aren’t they? Perhaps the truly clever twists and plot surprises are being kept back for when you’re actually watching the film. That was certainly the case with He’s Just Not That Into You, Love Actually and Feast of Love, the three films this one most closely resembles. I know that Joe Jonas is credited as providing the voice of a dog so that’s… something different, anyway.
