In October, we visited the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Over the next few days we’ll be posting interviews we conducted on set with the cast and crew. Today I bring you a transcript of our roundtable chat with co-screenwriter Terry Rossio. Here is a short quote from Rossio:

“The key to Jack Sparrow is that he’s the trickster, so he is an archetypal character. That type of character doesn’t show up in American cinema that much. You go to Bugs Bunny to get the classic kind of tricksters. And the key to the trickster character, is that that character is environmentally based. Jack Sparrow is not that good at not getting caught for example, (interviewer laughs) you can catch him. He’s caught all the time, the thing is is that you can’t hang on to him because what he does is, he starts tap dancing, and he starts blowing smoke and he starts talking circles around you. And what he’s doing it, is he’s looking for the opportunity because the ultimate thing about Jack Sparrow is he has faith and conviction in himself that the world is going to turn his way eventually. Maybe not now, maybe now he’s down and out, maybe his ship is sinking, maybe he’s drunk, maybe he’s in prison whatever. But he knows, he has faith through long experience that if he just hangs on long enough, there’ll be a little bit of fate that will turn things his way that he can actually use to his advantage. “

We won’t know until this Sunday which two teams will be playing in Super Bowl XLV on February 6 (Let’s go Jets!) but we do know several of the movies that will be competing during the commercial breaks. The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that Paramount has five commercial spots for some of its upcoming films: Super 8, Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor and Rango, Disney will be promoting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, DreamWorks has bought time for Cowboys & Aliens and Relativity will air a spot for Limitless starring Robert De Niro and Bradley Cooper.

Ads this year cost $3 million for a 30 second spot, slightly up compared to last year, so other studios have chosen to save money and buy time during pregame or Glee, which will air immediately following the game. Read which films will appear in those slots and also why we believe this isn’t the end of the Super Bowl shuffle. Read More »

Despite The Tourist performing well-below domestic expectations, no one would argue the drawing power of Johnny Depp. The famously reclusive actor generally stays out of the spotlight long enough to pick and choose whatever projects he wants to do and then he usually does them incredibly well. A few years back, Depp had a reputation for being so choosy with his roles that he probably never would have agreed to a big budget sequel, let alone two of them.

Fast-forward to 2011 and Johnny Depp has his fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides peaking up over the horizon (it opens May 20) and in a new interview he says that he’d even be game for a fifth installment. Just in case, Disney has already rehired Terry Rossio, who co-wrote the first four films, to write a script for a fifth. Read the exact quote and more after the break. Read More »

The Disney Channel has released a short “Movie Surfers” behind the scenes set video for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The video is essentially an interview with star Johnny Depp, and doesn’t reveal many new details. However if you look closely you might notice one of the easter eggs in the film which pays homage to the original Disneyland theme park ride. Can you spot it?
