David Hasselhoff has become the latest actor to join Piranha 3DD, the sequel to last year’s Piranha 3D (which in turn was a remake of the 1978 film Piranha). The new cast looks just as enjoyably eclectic as the last one — in addition to returning stars Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, and Paul Scheer, 3DD will also feature Katrina Bowden (30 Rock), Gary Busey (Point Break), Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies), David Koechner (Anchorman) and Matt Bush (Adventureland).

Here’s the plot synopsis — not that the premise is terribly difficult to figure out:

There’s something in the water . . . again. And this time no one is safe from the flesh eating fish as they sink their razor sharp teeth into the visitors of the best summer attraction, The Big Wet Water Park.

Piranha 3DD is currently shooting in Wilmington, NC under the direction of John Gulager (Feast). The film will open November 23, 2012. [The Hollywood Reporter]

After the jump: A plagiarizer, an Italian bird scientist, and a host of Hollywood stars.

Briefly: Now, finally, we can all breathe a tremendous sigh of relief. Just when it looked like Piranha 3DD might be a contractually-obligated sequel with a mostly uninspiring cast, we now know that it will probably be a coffer-filling sequel with a slightly more entertaining cast. Because Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames and Paul Scheer have all agreed to reprise their roles. Paul Scheer was actually supposed to die in the first film, but that scene was cut, so movie magic, in addition to contractual magic, means that he gets to fight fish another day. How does the Ving Rhames character return? Uh…a twin? Android replicant? Rapid cloning, perhaps?

Cameras are in or near the water in North Carolina right now, with a November release date set. The first film had some silly gore that went so far over the top that I couldn’t help but laugh. Hopefully under the direction of John Gulager (Feast) this one will go even further into blood-red waters.

Piranha 3DD has one more potential victim: Katrina Bowden, who plays the equally tiny, hot and self-absorbed assistant Cerie on 30 Rock, is now part of the cast. I don’t think I need to run down all the obvious potential perks of this casting for fans of her character on that show. I mean, we don’t need to get all lascivious here. But yes, she’ll be better to look at than David Koechner. The film also features Gary Busey, Danielle Panabaker, Matt Bush, Chris Zylka, Meagan Tandy, Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, and Clu Gulager, and is shooting now in North Carolina. Still waiting to hear about the porn starlets that will be cast; Piranha has a reputation to maintain, after all.

After the break, the rather inexplicable remake of Nicolas Winding Refn’s great crime movie Pusher gets a remake cast, and an endorsement from Mr Refn. Read More »

Now this is more like it. The basic cast of Piranha 3DD was announced earlier this week, but aside from the laughter inspired by the film’s title, which is so silly it defies all ridicule, the general response was a shrug. Without some of the better actors from the first film (Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Elisabeth Shue, Christopher Lloyd, Adam Scott and even Jerry O’Connell — in other words, the entire top-billed cast) this sequel seems like little more than the reflex action of the sequel-happy Dimension Films. And now that Gary Busey has been added there is no reason to reverse that opinion, but at least some parts of the movie are now more likely to be a lot of fun. Read More »

What more do you need to know about the sequel to Piranha 3D, other than the fact that this one is called Piranha 3DD? Title should tell you everything you need to know. Still, here’s some news from The Weinstein Company: the film is shooting now under the direction of John Gulager (Feast) with a cast that includes Danielle Panabaker (The Crazies), Matt Bush (Adventureland), Chris Zylka (The Amazing Spider-Man), David Koechner (Anchorman), Meagan Tandy (Unstoppable),  Paul James Jordan, Jean-Luc Bilodeau, Hector Jimenez, Adrian Martinez, and Clu Gulager. Fans who were anxiously anticipating the Timur Bekmambetov-produced found footage horror film Apollo 18, scheduled for release April 22 (which itself was already a shift) are in for about eight months of disappointment. The Weinstein Company has bumped the film to January 6, 2012. They also bumped Piranha 3DD from September 16 to November 23, while adding dates for Our Idiot Brother (which was called My Idiot Brother when we loved it at Sundance) and I Don’t Know How She Does It. The former, starring Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks and Zooey Deschanel  will be released August 26 and the latter, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Pierce Brosnan and Kelsey Grammar among others will take Piranha‘s date, September 16.

Speculate why TWC made these moves after the jump. Read More »
