We already know what Larry David‘s new film will be about (a marketing exec who misses out on a lucrative startup) and how it’ll be distributed (on HBO). Now we also know what it’ll be called and who’ll star in it.
According to a new report, the movie’s now going by the name Clear History, and the cast contains a healthy mix of comedians and non-comedians. In addition to David and the previously rumored Jon Hamm and Michael Keaton, the confirmed cast also includes Bill Hader, Danny McBride, Philip Baker Hall, Amy Ryan, Kate Hudson, Eva Mendes, and JB Smoove. The lone secret premiere of the 2011 Telluride Film Festival ended up being Ben Affleck‘s dramatic thriller Argo.
I’ve never understood the negativity regularly thrown at Ben Affleck. When given the right material, he’s delivered some great performances as an actor (Good Will Hunting, Shakespeare in Love, Boiler Room, Hollywoodland…etc). And in recent years he’s made the transition and proven himself to be a great director (Gone Baby Gone, The Town). Argo is his third feature film and it’s his smartest yet.

20th Century Fox has released the first teaser trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of the Newbery-winning children’s book Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Directed by Mark Waters (Mean Girls, Freaky Friday, Ghost of Girlfriends Past), the the comedy stars Jim Carrey as a businessman whose “professional side starts to unravel after he inherits six penguins, and as he transforms his apartment into a winter wonderland.” The movie co-stars Carla Gugino, Ophelia Lovibond, Philip Baker Hall, Andrew Stewart-Jones, James Tupper, Clark Gregg, David Krumholtz and Angela Lansbury.
For me, Jim Carrey movies are begining to become a subgenre of wacky family comedies, and all of them feel the same. Mr. Popper’s Penguins seems no different. And yes, the trailer even includes a catchy pop song from pop culture past. Seems like the fulfilled the formula to the T. That said, I’ll probably still see the movie, if not in the theaters then on video, just for the penguins alone (even if they are partly CG). Hit the jump to watch the teaser trailer. John Cusack will have company in The Raven, V For Vendetta director James McTeigue‘s fictionalized account of the final five “mysterious” days of Edgar Allan Poe’s life, but Jeremy Renner won’t be taking part. His schedule wouldn’t allow it, sadly, as he’s going to be off shooting the fourth Mission: Impossible. Stepping in for Renner is Luke Evans, a British actor who will fill the role of “a detective who partners with Poe (Cusack) to search for a serial killer who has kidnapped the author’s fiance and has gone on a murders spree that mimics the author’s work”.
Evans is a newcomer to Hollywood, but he’s had no trouble finding work. In a single year, he’s been cast as one of the titular musketeers in Paul W.S. Anderson’s 3D action-adventure adaptation of The Three Musketeers, as the thunder god Zeus in Tarsem’s Immortals, and alongside Jason Statham in the London-set serial killer thriller Blitz. Best case scenario: he’s an acting talent to be reckoned with, and filmmakers can’t resist his talent. Worst case scenario: the studios have found their next Sam Worthington.

Consider this a courtesy report on the fact that New Line is making a film based on the Warner Bros. cartoon character Speedy Gonzales, with George Lopez providing the voice of the character. Because, like the Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, the Garfield films, et al, this one is a movie purely for the kids. As an adult who always thought the character was the worst of WB’s stable, this sounds awful.
Speaking of Garfield, the writers behind that first movie (Alex Sokolow and Joel Cohen) are writing Speedy, which will be a live-action/CGI hybrid. Anne Lopez, wife of George, says “We wanted to make sure that it was not the Speedy of the 1950s — the racist Speedy. [He's] going to be a misunderstood boy who comes from a family that works in a very meticulous setting, and he’s a little too fast for what they do. He makes a mess of that. So he has to go out in the world to find what he’s good at.” My guess: he doesn’t become Mexico’s cultural ambassador to the UN. [THR]
