Woody Allen‘s latest film will be his first to shoot in the US in almost a decade, but that might not be the big reason to pay attention to it. The film just added three cast members, and they’re quite a set. One of them is a great surprise: Louis C.K., a man we know is a fan of Allen’s work if only for the homage he paid Manhattan in the third season of Louie. Another is also a surprise, but a much more surreal one: Andrew Dice Clay, whose comic sensibility is everything a classic Allen character would claim to hate, but might secretly love. Then, to balance things out, we have Peter Sarsgaard.

It’s time for another round of Release Date Shuffle! Perhaps the biggest news here is that Warner Bros. has pushed back its YA fantasy The Seventh Son, directed by Sergey Bodrov and starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, and Julianne Moore, much farther into next year. But there are also new dates for the supernatural teen romance Beautiful Creatures and the oddball dramedy Robot & Frank, and bad news for Relativity’s military thriller Hunter Killer. Hit the jump for more.

Far more strange than the Great Snow White Race of 2011 was the competition to produce a film depicting the life and times of early porn star and eventual anti-porn activist Linda Lovelace.

One film, Inferno, has Malin Akerman playing Lovelace and Matt Dillon playing her husband, business manager and accused pimp and abuser Chuck Traynor. Then there is Lovelace, which features Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard in the same roles, with Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman (Howl) directing. At this moment, it looks like Lovelace is winning this particular race, as the film is the first out of the gate with a legit promo image — complete with clothes, sorry. Check out the full pic below. Matthew Wilder’s Inferno was the Linda Lovelace biopic we heard about first, but it seems like Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman‘s Lovelace is the one that’s moving full speed right now. Amanda Seyfried and Peter Sarsgaard were cast as the titular porn star and her husband Chuck Traynor in early November, with Sharon Stone signing on to play Lovelace’s mother just a couple of weeks later. Then last month, Wes Bentley, Juno TempleHank Azaria, Bobby Cannavale, Chris Noth, Robert Patrick, and James Franco all boarded the picture as well.

Now Demi Moore, Adam Brody, and Eric Roberts have become the latest to join the drama, which is based on Eric Danville‘s book The Complete Linda Lovelace. More details after the jump.

Armie Hammer has been working his clean-cut golden boy looks to his advantage in The Social Network, J. Edgar, and the upcoming Mirror, Mirror, but the latest addition to his slate will see him transforming into a bit more of a “badass.” Hammer will bulk up and shave his head to star with Eric Bana in By Virtue Fall, a “gritty drama” about an ATF agent (Hammer) who gets framed for corruption and serves time into a maximum security prison. Once out, he’s determined to get revenge on his former partner (Bana), whom he blames for destroying his life.

The project marks the directing debut of Up in the Air co-writer Sheldon Turner, who also penned this script. By Virtue Fall is scheduled to start sometime in 2012, after Hammer wraps up Disney’s The Lone Ranger over the summer. [Deadline]

After the jump, Richard Jenkins becomes Adam Scott’s dad, while Juno Temple and Wes Bentley befriend Amanda Seyfried.

In true Hollywood fashion, after years of no biopics about Linda Lovelace, there are now two separate films in the works about the adult film star. We’ve known for months that Malin Akerman would be toplining Matthew Wilder’s take on the story, titled Inferno, and now Amanda Seyfried has entered negotiations to fill the role in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman‘s competing version, called Lovelace. Also considering the project is Peter Sarsgaard, who is in early talks to play Lovelace’s abusive pornographer husband Chuck Traynor. More details after the jump.

The long Labor Day holiday weekend is upon us, and between that and the Venice and Telluride film festivals, it seems like a lot of Hollywood has shut down in anticipation of the last relaxing days of summer. But we’ve got a few new casting bits to throw your way regardless. After the break,

  • Ed Helms will remake a French pimp comedy,
  • Paul Dano is among the cast additions to Kelly Reichardt’s new film Night Moves,
  • The unlikely duo of Stephen Dorff and Steve Coogan are in an adaptation of the novel The Catastrophist,
  • and found footage film Evidence gets new players.

This is a serious little casting break that follows either movies with serious intent (there’s one below about ‘unwitting incest,’ which I hope isn’t a comedy) or serious filmmakers like Kelly Reichardt. So, after the break, you’ll find:

  • Juliette Lewis stars in the ‘unwitting incest’ movie Blood or Water,
  • Ted Levin is in an indie inspired by secret CIA programs,
  • and Peter Sarsgaard is going to be in Kelly Reichardt’s new film, Night Moves. Read More »
