Oren Moverman‘s Rampart is one of the films I’m most excited about that hasn’t been shot yet. Why? Because Moverman wrote and directed a fantastic picture in The Messenger, and then you team him up with James Ellroy and Ellroy’s long-standing interest in the Los Angeles Police Department. Mix in Moverman’s leads from The Messenger, Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster, and then the rest of the cast, and this might be a winner.
Who’s the rest of the cast? Just like the headline says: new names include Steve Buscemi, Sigourney Weaver and Robin Wright. Read More »
I was thrilled a couple weeks ago to see that Oren Moverman will rewrite and direct Rampart, based on a story and script by James Ellroy. The film covers the scandal that engulfed the Rampart Division of the LAPD in the ’90s and now, perhaps appropriately, Ice Cube is in the cast. The guy went from being a full-on anti-authority spokesman to reformed family man and comedy filmmaker, and now he’s going back to the subject of crooked cops.
The irony is that Cube will play a cop in the film — he’s the homicide detective that investigates a dirty Rampart cop played by Woody Harrelson. Ben Foster is in the film, as well, but we don’t yet know his part. [Deadline]

Oren Moverman‘s debut feature, The Messenger, was an excellent film. I’ve been eagerly awaiting final word on what his follow-ups might be. He’s working on The Other Side of the Looking Glass now, for one. Today there’s indication that, rather than making a Kurt Cobain biopic, he could make an LA cop drama called Rampart, based on a James Ellroy script. Read More »
I loved the hell out of The Messenger. Oren Moverman‘s film about two soldiers assigned to notify next of kin about soldiers’ deaths was tense, empathetic and moving. It dealt with trauma better than Brothers and boasts a trio of fantastic performances. So I’ve been excited to hear about Moverman’s future films, and now it seems that in addition to his mysterious film This Side of the Looking Glass he will rewrite and direct a biopic about Nirvana singer and guitarist Kurt Cobain.
