The Darkest Hour, the new alien invasion film from producer Timur Bekmambetov and director Chris Gorak, is trying to differentiate itself from the scores of other alien films with a unique breed of invader: one made entirely of “lethal wave energy.”
It remains to be seen just how unique the film itself will be, but after getting a sneak peek at a trailer and some early concept art today at a Comic-Con press event, I can tell you it will at least look cool. The film centers on a group of young people — played by Emile Hirsch, Max Minghella, Olivia Thirlby and Rachael Taylor — who are visiting Moscow when the aliens attack. Together they have to figure out a way to survive and fight back against the aliens, who have no physical bodies and can vaporize them in an instant. Read More »

Many people might have missed this at WonderCon, but the Oni Press booth had our first look at the Timur Bekmambetov-produced alien invasion movie titled The Darkest Hour. Described as a 28 Days Later-type thriller, the story follows a group of American tourists visiting Moscow Russia when an alien invasion occurs.
The film stars Emile Hirsch (Speed Racer, Into the Wild), Olivia Thirlby (Juno, The Wackness), and Max Minghella (Bee Season, How to Lose Friends & Alienate People, Agora, The Social Network). Chris Gorak directed the film, with a script by M.T. Ahern and Leslie Bohem with revisions by Gorak, Jon Spaihts, and Josh Zetumer. The film was shot last Summer in Moscow with a $40-$50 million budget. Summit Entertainment is distributing the film in the states while Fox International is handling international.

Another domino has fallen in an amusing cause and effect release date shift that began when Martin Scorsese’s Hugo Cabret moved from December to Thanksgiving. That forced Rise of the Apes, which had already moved from the summer, to move back to the summer. That then caused The Smurfs to move up into July and now Summit has pushed The Darkest Hour, their 3D alien invasion film starring Emile Hirsch and Olivia Thirlby from its original August 5 release date (originally shared with The Smurfs and Rise of the Apes) to December 23. Focus Features has send out a press release announcing the start of production on the Paul Weitz adaptation of Nick Flynn‘s memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City. The film is working without a title for now, but as previously reported it does feature Paul Dano as Nick Flynn, and Robert De Niro as his homeless father, whom Flynn encounters while working at a shelter in Boston.
There is also the announcement that Lili Taylor and Dale Dickey (so scary in Winter’s Bone, and sadly sidelined in the awards season battle of badass moms) have joined the cast. Read More »
Paul Weitz is scripting and directing an adaptation of the Nick Flynn memoir Another Bullshit Night in Suck City and he has a hell of a cast assembled: Paul Dano plays Nick Flynn, who runs into his down and out father (Robert De Niro) while working at a Boston homeless shelter. Olivia Thirlby plays the romantic interest who gets Flynn the job at the shelter, and Julianne Moore is now onboard as well.
The info comes from a casting call looking for a stand-in for Julianne Moore, so we don’t have any official info on her role at this point, but something is likely to be out soon as the film starts shooting next week in New York City. (Edit: Deadline confirms the casting, but only says she has a ‘small role.’) The film is currently working under the shortened title Another Night in Suck City, but even that seems likely to change. Training Day and Harsh Times writer David Ayer is putting together his next film: a cop drama called End of Watch that he’ll write and direct. Jake Gyllenhaal is now in negotiations to star. Variety says the film is “a gritty drama that follows the friendship between longtime partners.” David Ayer is also tapped to write the remake of the Arnold Schwarzenegger action film Commando, but we haven’t heard much about the progress of that film in some time.

Paramount Pictures has released a red band movie trailer for Ghostbusters/Meatballs director Ivan Reitman‘s new comedy No Strings Attached. The movie follows a lonely doctor who gets lucky with a pretty co-worker (played by Natalie Portman) in a “comedy about the complications of friends with benefits.” The film costars Ashton Kutcher, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, Olivia Thirlby, Kevin Kline, Lake Bell, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, and the next breakout comedy actor (in my opinion) Jake Johnson.
The film actually started out with another title, Fuckbuddies. Of course, Paramount didn’t want to face the problems associated with releasing a movie under that title, so they changed it to Friends With Benefits, which eventually got changed into the truly horrible title No Strings Attached (at least they didn’t go with “No Strings”, the abbreviated title they were testing). The reason they moved on from Friends With Benefits is that another film had already staked claim to the title Friends With Benefits. A day after Paramount released the first trailer for No Strings Attached, Screen Gems released a red band movie for their R-Rated romantic comedy starring Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis featuring a very similar premise. I thought that must be what makes them different — one is raunchy, and the other isn’t. Looks like I was wrong.
It seems like Paramount is following suit, and has released their own red band trailer. This is one of those red band trailers which is out to prove the movie isn’t just a cookie cutter comedy and is a filthy r-rated movie. So in other words, how many cuts of swears, nudity and sex can you fit into three minutes (not that that’s a bad thing…). Watch it now embedded after the jump.
