At long last, the enduring patience of Game of Thrones fans is about to be rewarded. The Season 3 premiere of the fantasy drama is just two weeks away, as HBO’s marketing team is more than eager to remind you.
Over the weekend, we got not one, not two, but three new promos for the series, containing tons of juicy new footage between them. “War” goes into the reasons these scattered Westerosi are taking up arms against each other, “The Beast” looks at the darkness within these characters, and the 90-second full-length trailer explores the massive scope of the story. Check out all the videos after the jump.

Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them in the form of a beautiful mysterious woman in a downed spacecraft. In Joseph Kosinski‘s Oblivion, Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough play two members of a lonely crew mopping up what’s left of Earth decades after a devastating alien attack.
They’re nearing the end of their assignment when Julia (Olga Kurylenko) falls out of the sky, leading Jack (Cruise) to realize that not all is as it seems. And, naturally, that the fate of humanity rests in his hands. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Here’s the first official poster for Oblivion, the new film from Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski. The movie casts Tom Cruise as a drone repairman who is stationed on an Earth that has seen better days, to put things mildly. The first image sells a grand vision of an almost fossilized Manhattan, with Cruise in the now-standard poster stance. After Tron I’m not certain about Kosinski’s storytelling chops, but I know he can deliver visual spectacle, and this poster certainly promises big imagery.
Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo also star, with the script by William Monahan, Karl Gajdusek, and Michael Arndt based on a graphic novel that Kosinski created.
The trailer will hit on Sunday, but for now you can see the poster below. Read More »
All preconceived notions about the supernatural thriller Mama fly out the window when Jessica Chastain walks in the room. Before that moment, the film could be an archetypal supernatural thriller with little girls, a spectral being and a strong female lead like Naomi Watts in The Ring, Nicole Kidman in The Others or Mia Farrow in Rosemary’s Baby. But when Chastain strolls into a conference room at Pinewood Studios in Toronto, Canada in October 2011, it’s immediately clear Mama is not that.
Instead of her usual warm, blond or red head look, Chastain has a short black pixie haircut, tons of eye shadow, torn purple Mistfits t-shirt, faded black hot pants and a full sleeve octopus tattoo on her left arm. This not your typical heroine. This is a punk rock chick who’d usually be dead 20 minutes into a normal horror movie. But in director Andy Muschietti‘s Mama, based on an award-winning short film of the same name, she’s the star, a rebel unwillingly forced to look after two haunted girls who’ve been found fending for themselves after being missing for five years.
It’s day 18 of 46 on the Toronto set of Mama, a supernatural thriller produced by Guillermo Del Toro opening January 18, and the wardrobe of the star is just one of the pleasant surprises Mama has in store for us. Read More »
Next week you’re going to learn a lot about Mama, Andy Muschietti‘s adaptation of his short film starring Jessica Chastain and produced by Guillermo Del Toro. I was lucky enough to be on the set of the creepy film and you’ll be able to read all about it on Tuesday. Until then, Universal has just released a second trailer for the horror film, scheduled for release January 18.
In this trailer you’ll see Chastain’s punk-rock character struggle with raising the nieces of her boyfriend (Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, in a dual role) who are being haunted by the ghost of their mother. Check it out below and come back next week for much more. Read More »
Eagle-eyed /Film readers likely noticed there were no Superhero Bits today. Blame a last minute, awesome interview oppurtunity. But we couldn’t leave for the weekend without some kind of superhero update and both Marvel Studios and Marvel’s enemy Latino Review were happy to oblige.
On the official side of things, Marvel and Disney released the first official plot synopsis for Thor: The Dark World, which focuses heavily on the Phase Two/post-Avengers nature of the story. On the rumored side of things, Latino Review reports that a few members of the Guardians of the Galaxy will be featured more than others and are having their backstories interweaved into the Marvel Cinematic Universe continuity.
Across the cosmos with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, rumors say Mary Elizabeth Winstead is now at the top of the list for a young female actress and that Game of Thrones‘ Nikolaj Coster Waldau, Lost‘s Josh Holloway and Kevin Durand are all up for additional roles. Read more about all of this after the jump. Read More »
The trailer for Mama doesn’t mess around — it gives you a feral child within seconds, and ultimately gets to some effectively creepy ghost scares by the time the title card hits, all without feeling like it has given away the entire film.
Jessica Chastain (decked out in a black bob and dark wardrobe that highlights her vague resemblance to a young Angelina Jolie) plays the woman who ends up being a surrogate mother for two children who lived alone in the woods after their parents were killed. But the childrens’ real mother may not be entirely gone, and she might not be entirely OK with the new family arrangement. See the trailer below. Read More »
