the dark tower tv series

Even by fantasy franchise standards, MRC’s adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower looks pretty damn ambitious. Next year brings the much-anticipated movie starring Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, but that’s just the first piece in the puzzle. Also in the works is a companion TV series that’ll fill in some of the the universe’s intricate backstory. Elba will reprise his role for the show, as will his Dark Tower movie co-star Tom Taylor. But the project is also looking to cast a younger actor who can play the teenage version of Elba’s character.  Read More »

dark tower interview

The fact that a film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower has finished filming and it currently being edited for an early 2017 release date still amazes me. Just two years ago, this project looked completely and totally dead, the victim of an overly ambitious cross-media plan and budgetary constraints. And now, I can write an article that can include a picture of Idris Elba as Roland Deschain, the last Gunslinger at the top. This blows my mind.

From 2010 through 2015, Ron Howard was steering The Dark Tower alongside his producing partner Brian Grazer, eventually handing the project over to director Nikolaj Arcel. However, Howard and Grazer remained on board as producers and they’ve spilled their guts in a fantastic new interview where they explain the long journey to getting this movie off the ground.

Earlier today, we got our first official look at Nikolaj Arcel‘s The Dark Tower, the adaptation/remix of Stephen King‘s beloved horror/fantasy/western/science fiction series that has become a cornerstone of modern genre fiction. While the first wave of news rode upon a series of great quotes from star Idris Elba and a very evocative description of one of the film’s key sets, the second wave is all about Matthew McConaughey‘s black-clad villain and how this very tricky, dense series is making the transition to film.

It’s hard to imagine a more perfect actor for the role of Roland Deschain than Idris Elba, a man who contains all of the swagger and weariness you’d want from a knight-cowboy wandering a fantastical post-apocalypse in pursuit of the warlock who destroyed his world and plans to end existence as we know it. Stephen King‘s Dark Tower series has its ups and downs, but its the kind of imaginative blend of genres that demands a big screen adaptation and Roland the Gunslinger is the kind of larger-than-life character who deserves an actor of Elba’s caliber.

Elba’s casting has proven controversial in certain corners of the internet (spoiler alert: it’s because he’s a black man), but a new interview from the set of director Nikolaj Arcel‘s The Dark Tower is all of the evidence you need that he’s the man for job. But surely you already knew that.

“The man in black fled across the city, and the iPhone cameras followed.” That should be the new opening line for The Dark TowerNikolaj Arcel‘s new movie based on Stephen King‘s bestselling fantasy series. Since production moved to New York, the internet has been flooded with photos of stars Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey, taken by paparazzi and random passersby.

Today, producer Ron Howard got in on the fun as well, sharing a photo of himself with Arcel and Elba in full gunslinging gear. See the behind-the-scenes Dark Tower photo below.  Read More »

dark tower movie filming

After years of false stars and ambitious franchise plans that never came to fruition and a revolving door of talent that saw the likes of Ron Howard and Javier Bardem board the project and exit, the film adaptation of The Dark Tower has finally begun filming under director Nikolaj Arcel. As a fan of Stephen King‘s magnum opus book series, a wild combination of science fiction, horror, and fantasy that unites all of his work in one universe, I will be watching this production closely, eyebrow ready to rise at a moment’s notice. To paraphrase Roland the Gunslinger: I do not prematurely criticize with my laptop; he who prematurely criticizes with his laptop has forgotten the face of his father. I prematurely criticize with my heart.

the dark tower movie

It’s happening. After years of false starts and rumors and tales from development hell and being juggled between movie studios like a hot shell casing, the adaptation of Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower is finally and officially about to go before cameras. For real. Here’s how official it is: King and director Nikolaj Arcel actually did the thing where they sit down with Entertainment Weekly and discuss the project at length. You don’t do that if the film is still a pipe dream. Coffee is for closers and EW profiles are for movies that are actually getting made.

Although they obviously can’t say too much, King and Arcel did discuss the film’s timeline, its leading men, the possibility of a companion television series, and whether or not the most famous line of all King’s canon would make it into the adaptation. It’s an oasis of information.

UPDATE: Stephen King has confirmed McConaughey and Elba’s casting on Twitter, as you can see below. Original story from December 10, 2015 follows.

Matthew McConaughey fled across the desert and Idris Elba followed.

It’s the kind of left-field casting that is almost disgustingly perfect – why didn’t anyone think of this sooner? Idris Elba, the star of Luther, Pacific Rim, and Beasts of No Nation is the current frontrunner to play Roland Deschain in director Nikolaj Arcel‘s adaptation of The Gunslinger, the first novel in Stephen King‘s The Dark Tower series. If he does sign on the dotted line, he’ll be joining a cast that already includes Matthew McConaughey, who is set to play the mysterious “man in black,” the chief villain of the series and the Big Bad of the entire Stephen King universe.
