As a prequel to one of the most revered horror movies of all time, A&E’s Bates Motel has some pretty big shoes to fill. And while it’s unlikely to reach the same iconic status, it’s heartening to see that the first trailer actually looks pretty good. (Unlike, say, the one for the ill-received 1987 pilot of the same title.)
The new series, by Carlton Cuse (Lost) and Kerry Ehrin (Friday Night Lights), follows Norman through adolescence in the present day. Freddie Highmore plays the future murderer as a sweet, shy teen, while Vera Farmiga plays the mother who literally drives him insane. The family is eager for the fresh start promised by the new motel she’s just purchased, but as we all know from Psycho, their plans don’t really go as planned. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Time to round up some TV news, and what better place to start than with the announcement that Goodfellas writer Nicholas Pileggi and James Mangold will collaborate on Ralph Lamb, a ’60s-set Vegas crime drama based on the life of “cowboy-turned-Las Vegas sheriff” Ralph Lamb. CBS is producing; Mangold will direct and Pileggi will write with Greg Walker (Without a Trace).
Ralph Lamb served as sheriff of Clark County from ’61 to ’79 – a long run! — and actually rode his horse on duty for many of those years, even as he modernized the Vegas sheriff’s department and created the city’s first SWAT team. He was also a staunch anti-mob figure, which was no small deal given the mafia control over many casinos. It’s great, if expensive material for a show. [Deadline]

You might have seen the footage in front of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2 this weekend, or perhaps you caught one of the many bootlegs that have been circulating for the past week. But here’s the real thing: the first official teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan‘s third and final Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Read More »
Briefly: Looks like Nestor Carbonell will be back in Gotham City as mayor — the actor is in talks to join the cast of The Dark Knight Rises. He’s one more small piece of the puzzle that Christopher Nolan is starting to assemble, and joins other returning cast members Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Gary Oldman and Morgan Freeman. Variety also reports that Diego Klattenhoff and Burn Gorman are likely additions to the supporting cast.
We still don’t know much about the film, other than that Anne Hathaway plays Selina Kyle/Catwoman, Tom Hardy plays Bane and Marion Cotillard is likely to be Talia al Ghul. Rumors suggest that the League of Shadows factors into the plot, but nothing is confirmed. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays a role, and Juno Temple and Josh Pence have parts, too. The film shoots in Pittsburgh this summer, and will probably hit a couple other locations as well.
