Winona Ryder is Netflix’s newest star. Along with David Harbour, she’s just signed on to lead a supernatural drama series brewing at the company. Formerly titled Montauk, the show comes from Matt and Ross Duffer (Wayward Pines). Karl Gadjusek (Last Resort) serves as showrunner and Shawn Levy executive produces. Netflix is ordering a new genre series. So far the most high-profile original series from Netflix have been comedies, and dramas that edge toward thriller territory. But the company is bringing back the horror series Hemlock Grove for a third and final season, is moving into sci-fi with Sense8 from the Wachowskis, and is now buying another show with a hybrid sci-fi/supernatural bent.
Netflix has ordered eight hour-long episodes of Montauk, genre drama that sounds like it is equally influenced by ’80s Spielberg and The X-Files, with an extra-large dash of conspiracy theory. Read More »
Growing up, we all hear stories. Myths and rumors about our hometown and surrounding areas that probably aren’t true. But… maybe one is. Maybe one was about an older kid at your school who did something crazy, or an old man who lives in the woods who may or may not be a killer, or a secret government facility one town over. Every town has its stories and director Charlie Kessler decided to make one a reality.
The result is Montauk, a six minute short film combining several different types of “found footage.” The media cleverly overlap to tell a surprising story of a violent and horrible incident on the beaches of the Long Island community from which the film takes its name.
