baby moana

One of the most magical parts of Moana is the very first scene, in which an infant Moana waddles up to the shore and discovers that the Ocean is actually alive. Wordlessly, she coos and plays with the waves, and the waves playfully toss her about as well, leading her observing grandmother to realize that Moana is the Chosen One.

But that gorgeously rendered and enchanting scene almost didn’t make it into the movie. In fact, it was never meant to be in the final film at all, according to directors Ron Clements and John Musker. The scene was originally created as test footage, to see if they had the technology to render a sentient, alive Ocean. But test audiences loved the footage so much that the filmmakers had to find a way to put it in the movie.

Tarzan - Disney Easter Eggs

Any Pixar Animation fan can tell you that the computer animation studio loves to sneak characters from their upcoming movies into the preceding releases that hit theaters. We even featured a video that shows off a kind of Russian nesting doll of Pixar characater Easter eggs. But they’re not the only ones to have some fun with their character library.

Walt Disney Animation has been putting character Easter eggs in their movies for years, and a new video points out some of them. It’s not quite as organized like the chronological Pixar video, but it does have some Disney Easter eggs that I wasn’t aware of at all. Watch below! Read More »

Moana Honest Trailer

As the weather starts to warm up with spring just around the corner, you couldn’t ask for a better time for Disney’s most recent animated musical to be available on home video.

Moana takes us to the South Pacific to follow an independent, strong young girl who wants nothing more than to set sail on the ocean and voyage towards the unknown. It’s a movie that pokes fun at all of the usual tropes you find in Disney movies, though it also adheres to almost every single one of them. That doesn’t mean it’s not good, but it does make it a prime target for some lighthearted jabs by the folks at Honest Trailers.

Moana Deleted Scene

In Disney’s hit animated adventure Moana, our title character sets out to sea with little to no experience sailing. Eventually, she learns some tips and tricks thanks to the help of the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson). But in an earlier draft of Moana, the character was actually a little more proficient at sailing, even outdoing her six brothers.

That’s right, in an earlier edition of Moana, our hero actually had six older brothers. When Moana hits home video very soon, there will be a deleted scene featuring the siblings together in a little sailing race just off the coast of their island. It shows Moana (Auli’i Cravalho) had no trouble keeping up with (and even surpassing) her brothers on the sea, despite the fact that they were older. That scene has made its away online, and you can watch it after the jump. Read More »

moana cut song

The best thing about Disney’s Moana is that it is unabashedly an old-school musical, with its unique setting and fantastical story adding a fresh flavor to an experience that is defined by incredible showstoppers. And like every musical ever conceived since the dawn of the form, not every track written for the film made it into the final cut. Thankfully, we live in an age of home video special features and even more thankfully, we live in an age where those special features arrive online in advance of the actual Blu-ray and DVD release, allowing us to hear a sample from one of those songs that didn’t make the final cut.
