I didn’t get too excited when I heard that Michel Gondry would be directing an episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! After all, how much of a personal stamp could Gondry, who’s known for the visual whimsy of films such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Science of Sleep, add to a late night talk show?
Actually, a lot.

Michel Gondry’s The Green Hornet, which is out today in theaters, has had a long, arduous path to the big screen. Gondry was initially supposed to direct Hornet way back in 1997, but significant creative differences led to the film being shelved. Then, Kevin Smith climbed aboard the project to write and direct, before Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg finally seized control in 2007. Initially, martial arts favorite Stephen Chow was slated to direct, but further creative differences led to him leaving the project and Gondry assuming control once again (for more info on the film’s history, check out this NYTimes piece).
The final product cost over $100 million to produce and has a wise-cracking Rogen playing Britt Reid, the titular character who teams up with martial arts expert and genius engineer Kato (played by Jay Chou) to defeat the vicious Chudnofsky (Christoph Waltz). So was all the hullabaloo worth it? Does Rogen show he can still draw laughs? Does Gondry manage to imbue a superhero story with his whimsical visual style? Does Jay Chou’s heavy accent threaten to torpedo the whole thing? Hit the jump to leave your thoughts. Spoilers are allowed in the comments and after the break.

UPDATE: Sorry, apparently, even the Los Angeles Times can be wrong. 20th Century Fox has just said that they don’t know when the trailer for X-Men: First Class will premiere but it won’t be on The Green Hornet. Sorry if we got your hopes up. It did seem a little weird for a Fox trailer to premiere on a Sony movie.
We haven’t even seen an official frame from Matthew Vaughn‘s June 3 release, X-Men: First Class but now, almost out of nowhere, the trailer is mere days away. According to the Los Angeles Times, the trailer for X-Men: First Class, starring James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Rose Byrne, January Jones, and Kevin Bacon will premiere this Friday on prints of Michel Gondry‘s The Green Hornet. We ran a detailed trailer description last week, so if you can’t wait, you can read that again after the jump. Read More »
Academy Award winning director Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Be Kind Rewind, The Science of Sleep) will direct the January 13th episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live! in an attempt to promote his upcoming film The Green Hornet. Star of the film, Seth Rogen, will appear as Kimmel’s big guest during the episode, alongside young actress Elle Fanning (Somewhere) and a musical performance by The Damned Things. I’d love to see what kind of unquie angle Gondry will take with a late night talk show, because if you ask me, that tv genre is in need of reinvention. Quentin Tarantino and J.J. Abrams have directed previous episodes of the late night talk show. Read the full press release after the jump.

Some of the best movie lore has to do with why projects didn’t happen, rather than the stories behind ones that did. This is halfway to one of those stories. The Green Hornet opens this week as directed by Michel Gondry, but the film might have been very different. Stephen Chow was set to direct, and Nicolas Cage was originally going to play the villain role that was taken instead by Christoph Waltz. Now, there is a bit more detail about the departure of Cage. It might not shock you that one of the key factors was a funny accent. Read More »
Kato Vision is on full display in the brand new, full theatrical trailer for The Green Hornet, directed by Michel Gondry and starring Seth Rogen, Cameron Diaz, Jay Chou, Christoph Waltz and Michael Pena. It shows way more action and comedy than the first trailer, which I already thought looked pretty decent, but gets dangerously close to revealing too much. What trailer doesn’t these days, though? My fingers are crossed that this one lives up to its potential. Check out the brand new trailer for the film, which is scheduled for release January 14, after the break. Read More »
It’s been a rough road for The Green Hornet — change-ups behind the scenes elevated and then deflated some early interest as Stephen Chow came and went. But hiring Michel Gondry to apply his particular brand of quirky, unpredictable storytelling to a pulp superhero movie seemed like a good move. And while there are some who have trouble accepting Seth Rogen as the title character, casting Jay Chou as his sidekick/enabler Kato seems to have been a good move.
Now there’s a new international trailer for the film that really highlights Kato, and you can see it below. Read More »
