Wes Anderson is shooting his new film, Grand Budapest Hotel, right now, with Ralph Fiennes and Saoirse Ronan in the lead roles. Fiennes plays the concierge of the titular hotel, and the cast also includes Bill Murray, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Willem Dafoe, Harvey Keitel, Tilda Swinton, Jason Schwartzman, Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, F. Murray Abraham, Jude Law, and Mathieu Amalric.
Some set pics and videos hit the web last night, showing that the hotel of the title is grand, indeed, as are some of the costumes worn by the cast. Jeff Goldblum’s facial hair is no small matter, either. Check them all out below.

It’s been a fine year for Wes Anderson, as his film Moonrise Kingdom did well commercially, and has landed on many year-end top ten lists, and stands as a big awards contender. As the promotion for Moonrise Kingdom winds down, Anderson is looking forward to his “Euro movie” The Grand Budapest Hotel, which stars Ralph Fiennes as the composed concierge of the titular hotel, and also features Anderson regulars such as Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, and Jason Schwartzman.
While the film lost Johnny Depp as a lead (replaced by Fiennes), there have been rumors that some of the Moonrise Kingdom supporting cast that wasn’t previously part of Anderson’s informal stock company would take part in the next picture. In 2007, Vincent Paronnaud and Marjane Satrapi made a splash with their acclaimed feature debut Persepolis, an adaptation of Satrapi’s autobiographical comic. For their new follow-up Chicken With Plums, the pair have drawn upon another of Satrapi’s tomes, this one the true-ish tale of Satrapi’s renowned musician uncle.
Superficially, the two projects seem like opposites. Where Persepolis was animated in stark black and white, their sophomore effort is (mostly) live-action and bursting with vivid color. What hasn’t changed, however, is Paronnaud and Satrapi’s proclivity for producing bold visuals and mixing serious emotion with playful humor.

The first teaser trailer for David Cronenberg‘s Cosmopolis was a delirious ode to the filmmaker’s middle period — a chapter in his career that we’d begun to think was closed for good. But in that teaser for the adaptation of Don DeLillo‘s novel about a young billionaire who pulls strings from within a high-tech limo, we’re flashed with wild images of Robert Pattinson engaging in illicit sex, watching what seemed to be a dinosaur-sized rat, putting a bullet through his own hand, and musing about boundaries and desire. In short: vintage Cronenberg in all its glory.
Now the full trailer for Cosmopolis is available, and it expands on that teaser very nicely. We get a lot more of the story, including a good introduction to Pattinson’s character’s wife and possible voice of conscience (played by Sarah Gadon) as well as a motley crew of personalities including Juliette Binoche, Paul Giamatti, Mathieu Almaric, and Jay Baruchel.
The tone looks even more old-school Cronenberg than what we saw in the teaser — his affinity for a very particular dialogue cadence and isolated shot staging is very much on display. This one looks entertaining as hell, frankly. Read More »
