10 Cloverfield Lane spoilers discussion

Two months ago, it was revealed Dan Trachtenberg‘s directorial debut was a “spiritual” sequel to Cloverfield. The audience I saw 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi with were left both confused and excited by the trailer‘s title card. The question all along — well, actually just for the past two months — has been: how much of a sequel is this movie? Now we know. Kind of.

Please note that spoilers are encouraged in the comments section for this post. If you have not seen 10 Cloverfield Lane, we encourage you to return once you have.

FINAL WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD AND IN THE COMMENTS.

jj abrams

J.J. Abrams is a busy man. Not only did he direct, produce and co-write Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but he still found some time left over in his day to produce a follow-up to Matt Reeves‘ POV monster movie Cloverfield.

Dan Trachtenberg‘s 10 Cloverfield Lane might not be a sequel (although Abrams seems to suggest one could still happen one day), so how does it connect to the original Cloverfield movie? Will God Particle be third film in the “Clover-verse”? And might Cannibal Airlines actually become a real movie? We also learn how Abrams found director Dan Trachtenberg, discuss the cleverly minimal marketing campaign, and get the details on Bear McCreary‘s masterful score. And the best thing is this interview is entirely SPOILER FREE, so don’t be afraid to start reading now.

10 Cloverfield Lane Early Buzz

There has been plenty of mystery surrounding Dan Trachtenberg‘s feature directorial debut, 10 Cloverfield Lane. The first trailer revealed the project is related to Matt Reeves‘ found footage monster film, but producer J.J. Abrams has clarified it’s not a direct sequel. We’ll soon learn how much 10 Cloverfield Lane shares in common with Cloverfield, considering the film opens in theaters this weekend. Early reviews for the thriller have hit the web, and much to our delight, they’re all very positive thus far.

10 CLOVERFIELD LANE

The Cloverfield connection is definitely helping build buzz for 10 Cloverfield Lane, even if it’s more of a spiritual link than a narrative one. But in truth, we were sold on this movie long before we knew what it’d be called. Dan Trachtenberg‘s directorial debut brings together three top-notch talents — John GoodmanMary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr. — into one cramped underground shelter. With that cast, it’s pretty much a given that sparks will fly, no matter where the story takes them, what the film ends up being called, or what’s really lying outside that doomsday bunker.

At a recent press day in New York, I got the chance to sit down with Goodman and Winstead to discuss their new movie — its ties to Cloverfield, its feminist slant, Goodman’s terrifying character, and what it’s taught them about prepping for doomsday. Check out our 10 Cloverfield Lane John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth Winstead interviews after the jump.  Read More »

10 Cloverfield Lane Trailer

I’m trying to stay in the dark when it comes to 10 Cloverfield Lane. The teaser showed us pretty much everything we needed to know, but apparently the trailer that premiered the other day on The Walking Dead revealed more information about Dan Trachtenberg‘s feature debut. With the film opening in theaters next month, we’ll soon see more from 10 Cloverfield Lane.

For the past few weeks there’s been plenty of viral marketing for the project, and now we have more of it to unpack, including different trailers and coordinates to a location — which someone actually went to and took a video of his discovery.

10 Cloverfield Lane

Last month, Bad Robot cracked open a mystery box we didn’t even know existed. The first teaser trailer for 10 Cloverfield Lane would’ve looked promising under any circumstance, what with its vaguely creepy premise and stellar cast (John GoodmanMary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallagher Jr.). But the title added an extra layer of intrigue. Was this the Cloverfield sequel fans had been waiting for? If not, what connection, if any, could the new film have to Cloverfield?

We’ll have our answers sooner rather than later, as 10 Cloverfield Lane is scheduled to hit theaters in a little over a month. But in the meantime, Paramount devoted some (very expensive) time during the Super Bowl to give curious audiences some more material to mull over. Watch the new 10 Cloverfield Lane Super Bowl spot after the jump.  Read More »

10 cloverfield lane story

We were as surprised as the rest of you when that 10 Cloverfield Lane trailer arrived out of nowhere a few weeks ago. In an age where studios have their schedules laid out a decade in advance and start pushing trailers and posters 18 months before a movie is set to open, the sudden and dramatic reveal of very interesting genre film with some very interesting talent attached felt like a breath of fresh air. It’s not something everyone can pull off, but it’s a case of producer J.J. Abrams‘ patented “Mystery Box” philosophy actually doing what it is supposed to do.

And yet we still know very little about director Dan Trachtenberg‘s spiritual successor to Cloverfield, other than the fact that it’s set in an underground bunker where things seemingly go from bad to worse. Now, thanks to star Mary Elizabeth Winstead, we know a little bit more about the film’s plot and how it was made. But just a little bit more. After all, Abrams is known to implant small explosives in actors’ necks that go off when they say too much.

The Hollars review

Angie Han’s review of Other People began by pointing out that the film “sounds like the most stereotypical of Sundance movies” but “in practice, every element is so well executed that the film itself feels like something special.” The same could be said of John Krasinski‘s The Hollars, which shares many of the same Sundance cliches. But The Hollars has an incredible ensemble cast that pushes this film from just another screening on the Sundance schedule to a funny and charming movie that will probably play at a theater near you.

10 Cloverfield Lane

Paramount surprised audiences by releasing a new trailer attached to Michael Bay‘s 13 Hours:  The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi. The trailer is for a movie that had yet to be officially titled, a new thriller from JJ Abrams‘ production company Bad Robot. The trailer is for a film titled 10 Cloverfield Lane. Did JJ Abrams and Bad Robot somehow secretly produce a sequel to Matt Reeves’ found footage sci-fi film Cloverfield?
