In 2010, only 15 films were eligible for the Best Animated Film Oscar. Under the current rules, at least 16 films have to be eligible to have more than three nominees and this year that’s looking likely. Eighteen films have been deemed eligible to be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 84rd Annual Academy Awards and it’s a very crowded field. Pixar usually is a sure thing but as their film, Cars 2, underperformed – at least in Pixar terms – that leaves the door open for movies like The Smurfs, Rango, Puss in Boots and Mars Needs Moms. Well, maybe not that last one, but it’s eligible.
After the jump see the full list of eligible animated films and predict which five will get the nomination come January 24, 2012. Read More »
Talk about awkward. The last headline below this one is an endorsement of mocap filmmaking from Steven Spielberg. But the major industry talk today that wasn’t centered on SXSW was all about how the mocap film Mars Needs Moms absolutely tanked in its debut weekend. There is some significant fallout from that failure: Disney has passed on the mocap remake of the Beatles’ Yellow Submarine, which Robert Zemeckis had planned to make this year. Read More »

Walt Disney Pictures has released a second movie trailer for the Robert Zemeckis’ produced adaptation of Berkley Breathed’s children’s book Mars Needs Moms. The performance capture film is being directed by The Prince of Egypt/The Time Machine helmer Simon Wells and stars Seth Green, Joan Cusack and Dan Fogler. I have been disappointed with everything I’ve seen thus far, and this trailer doesn’t change things. I continue to believe there is a lot of untapped potential in the science ficiton computer animated world. Think about it: What (non-Anime) animated films other than WALL-E have done it right? We’ve seen a poster and one image from Mars Needs Moms, the Robert Zemeckis-produced Disney film that adapts Berkeley Breathed‘s book of the same name. Both suggested that quite a few liberties had been taken with the material, and now there’s a trailer to show just how far Disney has taken it. Read More »
We’ve seen one poster image (with a strong Close Encounters vibe) for the Disney film Mars Needs Moms. Now there’s a new image from the film that shows off both the aliens and a couple of human characters. The film’s title always makes me assume it’s a kitschy kids film — which would be fine — but then I remember that it is based on the book of the same name by venerable Bloom County creator Berkeley Breathed. And that’s just fine. So keep that in mind, and check out the full image after the break. Read More »

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
IMAX and Walt Disney Pictures announced today that the Robert Zemeckis-produced Mars Needs Moms starring Seth Green and Joan Cusack, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and Pixar’s Cars 2, will all be released in IMAX 3D (in addition to the traditional 2D and 3D releases).
Mars Needs Moms is not much of a surprise considering the movie is using the performance capture technologies of Zemeckis’ previous animated films, all of which have been released in IMAX 3D. Also, Cars 2 isn’t much of a shocker as Toy Story 3 was released in IMAX 3D. Read the full press release after the jump.
