Rosario Dawson

True Detective Season 2 already has a great male cast in place, with Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, and Vince Vaughn all signed on for major roles. But it’s had a tougher time trying to pin down the female lead.

Elisabeth Moss and Rachel McAdams have both been named as possibilities in recent weeks, but neither’s clinched the role quite yet. Now seven more actresses are entering the mix, including Rosario Dawson and Jessica Biel. Hit the jump for the latest on the True Detective Season 2 female lead casting.

Superman ice bucket challenge

Okay, so as I said yesterday, we usually try to focus on entertainment news and avoid celebrity stories, but the Star Wars Episode 7 cast and crew taking the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge felt entertainment news-worthy enough to feature on the site. I honestly thought that was the last of those videos we’d feature on /Film but now the comic book superheroes are taking the challenge in full costume: Henry Cavill and Amy Adams both took the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge on the set of Zack Snyder’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in their film costumes. I’m going to call it the Superman Ice Bucket Challenge.

Thats right, Cavill is wearing his complete Man of Steel Superman suit and Adams is dressed as reporter Lois Lane. We absolutely needed to share this video in case you missed it. And one Ice Bucket Challenge is nothing for Superman, so they give our favorite alien superhero something extra. Watch the Superman ice bucket challenge video embedded after the jump now.

cbgb-toilet

This trailer for CBGB, which dramatizes the history of the NYC club that was the birthplace of new wave and punk in America, makes a lot of noise about the fact that the club’s bathroom (above) was famously gross. In fact, after the club closed, parts of that bathroom and other elements of the joint were actually disassembled and worked into the sets used for the movie.

And yet the footage itself looks like a squeaky clean recreation of the house where bands like Blondie, the Talking Heads and the Ramones built their careers.

Kids deserve to know about the roots of punk rock in the US, and there’s nothing really wrong with a bunch of people playing dress-up as the biggest figures of the NYC new wave and punk scene. But it’s pretty funny. Watch the footage below and you’ll see Alan Rickman as Hilly Kristal, who opened the iconic club in ’73, Donal Logue as his compatriot, and Malin Akerman, Rupert Grint, Ashley Greene, Johnny Galecki, Ryan Hurst, Justin Bartha and Bradley Whitford as members of Talking Heads, Blondie, The Ramones, Dead Boys, The Police, Iggy Pop and Patti Smith Group. No one has ever truly confirmed the full intent of the numbers stations. For decades — since WWII, some say since WWI — shortwave broadcasts around the world have repeated strings of numbers for unknown recipients. The voices are male and female, some children, some synthesized. Supposedly the stations are government-maintained, the numbers strings of one-time pad code. None have ever been acknowledged in an official capacity. Some still broadcast.

The stations have invaded popular consciousness in small ways: a huge collection of recordings was released as The Conet Project; one of those recordings found its way into Wilco’s song ‘Poor Places;’ another is used in ‘Gyroscope‘ by Boards of Canada. The show Lost famously used the idea of the stations as part of its incorporation of a string of powerful numbers into the main storyline.

And now a numbers station is the setting and namesake for a routine-looking thriller starring John Cusack and Malin Akerman. Read More »

Look out, bad-film fans: Josh Lucas might be making a play to be the new Nicolas Cage, and he’s doing it from within a Nic Cage movie! Stolen reunites Cage and his Con Air director Simon West (who also helmed last weekend’s The Expendables 2) in a film about a criminal (Cage) whose former partner (Lucas) wants a payout from an old job. To get it, he kidnaps Cage’s daughter (Sami Gayle) and drives around town with her held in his cab as Cage frantically tries to track her down with the aid of an old associate (Malin Akerman).

If that doesn’t tell you everything you need to know, the header photo should help out. Check out the trailer below, and be ready to see Josh Lucas chewing scenery with his mouth wide open. Read More »

It seems like biopics and other similar true life stories are exploding in development right now, and we’ve got casting for three big ones. First up, the Jimi Hendrix film All is By My Side has just added a young Keith Richards. British actor Ashley Charles will play the Rolling Stones songwriter and guitarist.

John Ridley is directing the film now, with Andre Benjamin as Hendrix, and Hayley Atwell as Linda Keith, who during the story’s time frame was dating Richards. She ‘discovered’ Hendrix and tried to get the Stones management to work with him, to no avail. Keith Richards likely won’t play a big part in the film, which chronicles the days before Hendrix made it big.

Fun fact checking: let’s see how people refer to Richards in this film. In ’63 the Stones manager started listing the guitarist as Keith Richard, and it wasn’t until the ’70s that he once again became Richards.  [THR]

After the break, Donal Logue plays an important figure in the New York music scene, and Colin Farrell is in talks for the Mary Poppins film Saving Mr. Banks. Read More »

In the past few weeks, biopics have been the source of the weirdest casting news. Ashton Kutcher is playing Steve Jobs, and Jane Fonda is playing Nancy Reagan. Now a casting choice that seemed like a PR stunt when first mentioned — Lindsay Lohan playing Elizabeth Taylor in a Lifetime movie — has come to pass, while Taylor Swift is said to be lining up to play folk and feminist icon Joni Mitchell.

On the other side of casting news, Malin Akerman is doubtful that she’ll really get the chance to play a different feminist icon, one-time porn star Linda Lovelace, in Inferno. And Eric Bana is no longer attached to play Elvis.  Read More »
