2013 saw the release of two “Terrorists Take Over the White House Movies” and Olympus Has Fallen was the winner in that particular showdown, outgrossing the glossier and far more expensive White House Down at the box office. Somehow, the trashy and often technically inept Gerard Butler joint is getting a sequel and the movie where Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx have a limo chase on the White House lawn is not. I’m still a little sore about this.
And yet, I do appreciate the B-movie charms of the Olympus Has Fallen and especially enjoy how approximately 64% of the film consists of Butler’s disgraced Secret Service agent wandering dark hallways and stabbing people in the head. There are more head-stabbings per minute in Olympus Has Fallen than another other action movie ever made, which makes the dearth of head-stabbings in these new batch of London Has Fallen clips rather disappointing.

After saving the president (Aaron Eckhart) from a terrorist infiltration of the White House in Olympus Has Fallen, once-disgraced Presidential guard member Mike Banning (Gerard Butler) is now protecting the world leader at every turn as the new head of the Secret Service. But even he may have his work cut out for him when terrorists strike again across the pond.
London Has Fallen sees Butler doing his best John McClane as he is forced to go on the run in foggy London Town to keep the president safe from wave after wave of terrorists who want nothing more than to get their hands on America’s Commander in Chief. Briefly: Endangered world leaders are apparently no match for endangered astronauts. Focus Features has moved the London Has Fallen release date from October 2 to January 22, 2016, just days after Fox shifted Ridley Scott’s The Martian up to October 2.
The new slot puts London Has Fallen against another British-American triller set in London, Ariel Vromen’s Criminal. Also opening that day are the faith-based mystery Risen and the horror film The Boy.
Gerard Butler once again as Secret Service agent Mike Banning, who accompanies the POTUS (Aaron Eckhart) to the funeral of the British prime minister. When the event is targeted by terrorists, Banning teams with an MI-6 agent (Charlotte Riley) to foil the plot. Morgan Freeman also returns from Olympus Has Fallen. [Deadline]
Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart, and Morgan Freeman return in the sequel to Olympus Has Fallen. This time, they’re over in the UK, as the title London Has Fallen implies.
Just hours after the elections that locked in David Cameron at Downing Street with a new conservative majority government behind him, Focus Features has released a teaser poster for the film featuring big destruction in London. The image explodes Big Ben and promises big action spectacle as a united terrorist organization seizes the (fictional) PM’s funeral as an opportunity to attack gathered world leaders. Read More »
