aladdin casts billy magnussen

The live-action Aladdin has been under intense scrutiny by fans who were hoping for it to be an authentic depiction of the Middle Eastern-set story that the 1992 animated classic depicted. Well, as authentic as could be for a movie that mashed together Indian and Middle Eastern imagery spanning hundreds of years.

Still, diversity was an important aspect of this live-action adaptation, and Disney and director Guy Ritchie promised to make it a priority — despite rumblings that studio was having trouble finding actors of Middle Eastern and Indian descent to play its leads. Those concerns seemed to be for naught, however, when the film cast Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud as Aladdin and half-Indian, half-British actress Naomi Scott as Jasmine. However, Disney may have lost the goodwill surrounding the leads’ casting when it cast its first white actor Billy Magnussen as an original character who didn’t appear in the animated movie.

Live Action One Piece TV Show

One Piece is one of the most popular — and baffling — anime staples in Japan. While the wacky, surreal pirate romp hasn’t quite accumulated the same amount of fervor over in the United States as it has in Japan, it’s still one of the most well known anime properties today. And it’s still going, 20 years after its inception. That’s unheard of, even in the anime world. It can be chocked up to just how obsessed Japan is with One Piece — when I went to Japan last year, there were entire stores dedicated just to One Piece. Not anime, One Piece. It’s a phenomenon all on its own.

So for a show of such pop culture impact as One Piece, the only logical next step is…an American TV series?

Guy Ritchie‘s adaptation of Aladdin is trying to stay one jump ahead of the original animated classic.

Now that the production has cast its two leads of color after a comprehensive and troubled search, Disney’s next live-action project is turning its eyes to its script. To rewrite the screenplay, Disney has hired former Game of Thrones screenwriter Vanessa Taylor.

Lin Manuel Miranda to Score The Little Mermaid Remake With Alan Menken

Lin-Manuel Miranda continues his streak as Disney’s darling, first jumping on the House of Mouse’s ship to co-write the songs to 2016’s animated Polynesian-set adventure, Moana. He then was announced as the co-lead of Mary Poppins Returns, the new sequel with Emily Blunt to the musical classic that originally starred Julie Andrews.

Now, Miranda is signing on to score the live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid with one of his idols, and the original composer of the 1989 animated classic, Alan Menken.

live-action aladdin

Disney is in a whole new world of trouble. The live-action adaptation of Aladdin is reportedly struggling to cast its lead roles of Aladdin and Jasmine, the street rat and the Arabian princess who stole each other’s (and our) hearts in the classic 1992 animated film.

Disney and director Guy Ritchie are intent on finding an unknown actor and actress of Middle Eastern or Indian descent, as the animated movie takes place in the fictional Middle Eastern city of Agrabah. However, because Aladdin will continuing Beauty and the Beast‘s trend of adapting the musical elements of the animated films, Disney and Ritchie are having trouble finding stars of color who can act and sing.

Aladdin Rumor: Tom Hardy as Jafar?

You’d think after the uproar that arises over every whitewashing debacle — Ghost in the Shell, Aloha, Pan, Exodus: Gods and Kings, The Last Airbender, and more that I could list but it would take approximately 10 years to do so — Hollywood would stop doing it. Or at least, stop and think, “Hey, maybe this is a bad idea.” But no, producers and directors keep going back to the age-old “the white actor is the default” adage, even if the source material calls for the exact opposite.

To be fair, I may be working myself up into a frenzy over a rumor that will never come to fruition. The rumor is pretty heinous though: Guy Ritchie, who will be adapting Disney’s live-action version of Aladdin, wants to cast Tom Hardy as the movie’s villain, Jafar.

Ewan McGregor Christopher Robin

As Disney continues its reign of box office domination, one of the most effective tools in the studio’s arsenal has been the live-action adaptation of a classic animated property. Beauty and the Beast is the latest example, pulling in over a billion dollars worldwide (and counting), but there are plenty more where that came from.

One of the many in development is Christopher Robin, a live-action Winnie the Pooh sequel that follows an adult version of Pooh’s best friend. A new report states that Beauty and the Beast star Ewan McGregor is set to play the title character…does that bode well for a Star Wars spinoff centered on Obi-Wan Kenobi? Read on for the Ewan McGregor Christopher Robin news.

the lion king remake

Jon Favreau has a lot to live up to with his The Lion King remake. The 1994 original is one of the crown jewels of the Disney Renaissance of the late ’80s and ’90s and one of the most successful Disney animated movies of all time.

And Favreau is aware of that pressure to adapt a popular story still fresh in people’s minds — it was one of the pitfalls that Beauty and the Beast had to navigate with Bill Condon’s 2017 adaptation. But he has a method for making sure he does right by the original The Lion King.
