I LOVE YOU PHILLIP MORRIS
I Love You Phillip Morris is a rare breed. When it comes to true story tales of brilliant-minded men against the law, there are only so many forms we can expect to see those stories take on the big screen — as a historical crime drama perhaps, or an upbeat caper thriller — but Bad Santa writers Glenn Ficarra & John Requa saw the potential for something different for their directorial debut, and opted for a campy romantic comedy instead. Their decision paid off wonders. The film still suffers a tad from formula fatigue, but by finding the humor in the absurd, the predictably of the proceedings is effortlessly overcome by the pic’s sheer good-natured charm. Much of that credit is owed to Jim Carrey and the bright-eyed Ewan McGregor, who are a perfect fit for the film’s playfully innocent tone. The true highlight of the film though is the subversive, darkly comedic edge that its directors inject during opportune moments to offset the saccharine sweetness, providing the film an underlying notion of reality that’s both hilarious and smartly demonstrative of how our circumstances in life are all about the outlook with which we choose to perceive them.
Available on Blu-ray? Yes.
Notable Extras: DVD & Blu-ray – Audio commentary with producer Andrew Lazar and writers/directors John Requa & Glenn Ficarra, and a “The Making of I Love You Phillip Morris” featurette.

Though TRON: Legacy came in a distant third at the box office over the Christmas weekend, it dominated its rivals on Twitter. According to a report by Mashable, more people tweeted about TRON: Legacy this weekend than both Little Fockers and True Grit combined. Those films were the number one and two films at the box office, pulling in $30.8 and $24.9 million respectively while TRON: Legacy made $19.1 million. On Twitter, though, TRON: Legacy was the clear winner as people used the word “Tron” about 1000 times an hour while “little fockers” and “true grit” each barely averaged 500 tweets an hour

What does this all mean, if anything? We break it down after the jump. Read More »

Movie Trailer #2: ‘Little Fockers’

We’ve seen a teaser and an international trailer for Little Fockers, the second sequel to Meet the Parents, and now there is a full theatrical trailer. What’s the difference? In addition to showing more plot and (depending on your point of view) jokes, this trailer has a few shots of Dustin Hoffman, whose mart was shot after the teaser debuted. Read More »

Not long ago we heard that reshoots for Universal’s threequel Little Fockers were potentially going to involve Dustin Hoffman, who appeared in Meet the Fockers, the first sequel to Meet the Parents. Hoffman had originally declined to be a part of Little Fockers for a variety of reported reasons. (Scheduling, the part written for him, financial differences, etc.)

But changes are being made to Little Fockers, and one of them is that Dustin Hoffman has been written back in, and will take part in pickup shooting in September. Read More »

UPDATE: The LA Times talked to Universal chairman Adam Fogelson, who said the film is testing well and added,  “As we’re continuing to refine the film, one of the ideas that’s certainly a possibility is having Dustin be a part of the picture. We didn’t call him and say that we desperately need his help or anything like that. But there is one path that we’re pursuing that could include his involvement.” Take that as rumor control or damage control, as you will.

I’m shocked — shocked! — that Little Fockers isn’t testing well. The first trailer for the film left me with little doubt that the would be exactly what you’d expect out of a threequel to Meet the Parents: broad, mildly awkward comedy with a few family-approved sexual and scatological tee-hees. Gurgle.

Earlier this week there was a report that a week’s worth of pick-up shots were in order, to give the film a little more zing. Now another source says that the film might undergo more dramatic reconstructive surgery, including (if possible) an injection of Dustin Hoffman. Read More »
