HBO Westworld

Michael Crichton‘s Westworld is a movie packed with ideas, but it doesn’t add up to much more than robots going berserk. While it’s an enjoyable film with some terrific sequences, there’s a goldmine of untapped ideas in it. The creators of HBO’s Westworld, Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, take real time to explore some of those ideas — and plenty more they bring to the table — in the thrilling, unsettling, and thoughtful first four episodes of season one.

Felicity Jones Amazing Spider-Man 2

Sony’s complete revamp of its Spider-Man franchise continues. First, the company moved The Amazing Spider-Man 3 back several years. Now, after Drew Goddard’s Sinister Six opens in 2016, Sony is planning to release a spin-off film starring one of Spider-Man’s female counterparts in 2017. There’s no word on which character it’ll be, though Spider-Woman and Black Cat are obvious options. Lisa Joy Nolan (Westworld, Pushing Daisies) has been hired to write. The Black List 2013

Most year-end best-of lists consist of things that have already been produced, released, and consumed. But the Black List stands apart in that it’s all about the films that haven’t come out yet. Created by Franklin Leonard and Dino Sijamic, the annual compilation shines a light on the “most liked” unproduced screenplays of each year, as voted on by hundreds of Hollywood executives.

Not all of these films will get made, let alone made well, but the Black List still serves as a good indication of what projects are being buzzed about. Last year’s list included Transcendence and RodhamDjango Unchained and Saving Mr. Banks were among the highlights the year before that. Three out of the last five Best Picture winners were Black List scripts, as were seven of the past twelve screenwriting Oscar winners.
