Empire State

Dwayne Johnson may be “franchise Viagra,” having helped prop up the Journey to the Center of the Earth, Fast and Furious, and G.I. Joe movie series over the past couple of years, but even he can’t keep Dito Montiel‘s Empire State from going straight to DVD.

The film’s lack of a theatrical run is even more surprising when we look at the rest of the cast list: The Hunger GamesLiam Hemsworth leads, while Michael Angarano and Emma Roberts play supporting roles. As starry ensembles go, it’s not Les Misérables, but it’s a combination that sounds on paper like it should sell tickets.

Then again, even the brightest, most talented stars can only do so much to elevate an otherwise mediocre film. And while the first trailer isn’t quite terrible, it is damningly generic. Hit the jump to check it out.

Paranoia Oldman Hemsworth Ford

During the summer movies tend towards sun, superheroes and sequels. There are romantic comedies with huge stars, and animated 3D films generating lines that run around the block. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for the little guy. But maybe something else can sneak in. Paranoia, directed by Robert Luketic, is an espionage thriller that doesn’t boast any big special effects, just an impressive cast with an intriguing plot.

Liam Hemsworth stars as a man hired by one tycoon (Gary Oldman) to spy on his competitor, played by Harrison Ford. Amber Heard, Josh Holloway, and Richard Dreyfuss are caught up in the scheme, too. The film opens August 16. Check out the first trailer below. Read More »

The Hunger Games Catching Fire Effie

One year after Katniss and Peeta won the Hunger Games, the evil President Snow is not amused. He’s got something very special planned for the Victors, something that will shake Panem to its core.

Similarly, one year ago The Hunger Games was a surprise box office champion and November 22, Francis Lawrence‘s sequel, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, hits the big screen.

The first trailer for the film is now online. The movie brings Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Lenny Kravitz, Elizabeth Banks, Stanley Tucci, Donald Sutherland, Toby Jones, Willow Shields back to roles they played in the first film, and adds Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Sam Claflin, Jena Malone, Lynn Cohen, Meta Golding, Amanda Plummer and Jeffrey Wright. The Expendables 2 delivers on every single insane promise you can imagine. It is loud, stupid, funny, and filled with lots of over the top action. It lets some of the world’s most famous action actors chew the same pieces of scenery. The first film did some of that, but was mostly just boring, getting caught up in a bland story. In this sequel, directed by Simon West (Con Air), there’s definitely some of that bland story, and the dialogue is much worse than that of the first film. But when that is juxtaposed with gory, boisterous action set pieces that include exploding heads, flying knives, plane crashes, boat crashes and guns of all shapes and sizes, it’s forgivable and fun.

Adding to the success is a cast that’s even better this time around, as Chuck Norris and Jean Claude Van Damme join the already awesome line-up of Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Jet Li and Randy Couture. Oh, and Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s roles are expanded this time too. West hasn’t reinvented the wheel with The Expendables 2, he’s just shined it up real nice, put spikes and skulls on it and rolled it through the mud. So far, it’s the best action film of the year. ‘The Expendables 2′ Theatrical Trailer

We’ve seen two teaser trailers for Simon West’s sequel to The Expendables — well, one teaser, and one trailer for this trailer. But now we’ve got an actual trailer, with actual footage showing some of what happens when you put Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger in the same movie.

I don’t think there’s anything else I can say here; see the trailer below. (Header image is, sadly, not from the trailer. Consider it a bonus.) Read More »
