One of Steven Soderbergh‘s last films (he’s planning to retire after shooting two more, The Side Effects and Behind the Candelabra), Haywire features MMA star Gina Carano and opens on January 20. You can see the first five minutes of the movie below.

Robert Redford‘s directorial effort The Company You Keep already boasts a top-notch cast, with Julie Christie, Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Brit Marling, Shia LaBeouf, Stanley Tucci, Richard Jenkins, Stephen Root, and Redford himself all signed on. But apparently,there’s still room on the roster for more impressive talent. Anna Kendrick, Terrence Howard, Brendan Gleeson, and Sam Elliott have just boarded the cast of the political thriller, along with 11-year-old newcomer (and America’s Got Talent finalist) Jackie Evancho.
The Lem Dobbs-scripted adaptation of Neil Gordon‘s novel centers around Jim Grant (Redford), a former Weather Underground member who’s been on the FBI’s wanted list for the past three decades. When a determined young reporter uncovers the truth about his past, he’s forced to go on the run. Last summer we saw the first trailer for Steven Soderbergh‘s B-movie action experiment in which MMA star Gina Carano beats the hell out of an big-name cast that includes Channing Tatum, Ewan McGregor, Antonio Banderas, Bill Paxton, Michael Douglas and Michael Fassbender.
The action looks fantastic and there’s a definite appeal to seeing this cast and crew making film powered by what could easily be a direct-to-DVD story. But the first trailer also suggested Carano’s limitations as an actress, as her dialogue scenes didn’t seem nearly as powerful as the action.
A UK trailer has hit that seeks to fix that issue by paring down the same basic trailer into something that is a minute shorter. It dispenses with some dialogue and some plot revelations, and focuses on action and atmosphere. Would it be so bad if the first official image from all of our most anticipated films for the next year involved a prominent cast member firing a rifle with some massive muzzle flash, would it? We saw an image like this featuring Bruce Willis from Looper, and now here’s the first official still from Steven Soderbergh‘s Haywire.
It’s a little weird that an action film starring MMA fighter Gina Carano would come out of the gate with an image of her brandishing a weapon other than her fists and feet, but what the hell, I’ll take it. Steven Soderbergh has two big pictures coming down the pipe for 2011: Contagion, which he recently finished shooting, and Haywire, the thriller in which MMA fighter Gina Carano makes her big acting debut as a double-crossed black ops soldier who is out for revenge. We haven’t seen very much at all from Haywire, despite the fact that the film is finished and test-screening, but now there are some great concept posters floating around.
These aren’t likely to be final — more than likely when the movie actually hits theaters the one-sheet art will foreground much of the strong supporting cast.
