Man Up

There are those who mourn the death of the classic romcom, and those who prefer the genre in its newer, more Apatovian incarnation. Both groups would do well to watch Man Up, a British charmer that has one foot firmly planted in each camp. It’s full of meet-cutes and grand romantic gestures, just like your favorite ’90s classics, but it’s got the grounded messiness and R-rated jokes of a more modern affair. And it absolutely nails the most important aspect of any romcom: a lead couple with chemistry, in this case played by Simon Pegg and Lake Bell.

‘Man Up’ Trailer: Simon Pegg Woos Lake Bell

Man Up

When he’s not collaborating with Edgar Wright, beaming up James Kirk, or nearly fumbling missions with Ethan Hunt, Simon Pegg can apparently make for a pretty convincing romantic lead. At least that’s what the new Man Up trailer wants to believe, in which he plays a man who catches the eye of unlucky-in-love Lake Bell.

She’s a cynic who’s all but given up on finding love; he’s a charming romantic who’s been set up on a blind date. Through a series of only-in-the-movies mix-ups, he mistakes Bell for his blind date, and they proceed to hit it off before the embarrassing truth comes spilling out. Watch the Man Up trailer after the jump.

No Escape Trailer

The Weinstein Company have released the trailer for their international thriller No Escape. No, this isn’t the big screen adaptation of Dan Trachtenberg’s Portal: No Escape you’ve been hoping for… The story follows Owen Wilson‘s family who move to Southeast Asia to suddenly find themselves in the middle of a violent political uprising, and must escape as rebels attack the city. The story sounds like a grounded character thriller but the trailer focuses on big moments of action you might not expect from that logline. The film is from Quarantine/Devil director John Erick Dowdle, and co-stars Pierce Brosnan and Lake Bell. Watch the No Escape trailer now embedded after the jump. Craig Gillespie‘s Million Dollar Arm stars Jon Hamm in a fictionalized story of a sports agent who finds himself marginalized in the business at home, and comes up with a scheme to find a new pitching star in India. Disney’s movie looks like exactly the sort of true-story sports film we’ve seen from Disney in the past, and does give actors like Aasif Mandvi, Suraj Sharma, and Lake Bell a chance to play with Hamm on the big screen. Simon Pegg / Lake Bell

Simon Pegg is something of an expert when it comes to losing women onscreen. Spaced, Shaun of the Dead, and Hot Fuzz all start with him getting dumped, and even The World’s End involves a former flame who remembers him less than fondly. But his luck could change with Man Up, a new romcom by The Inbetweeners director Ben Palmer.

Lake Bell has just signed on for the StudioCanal project, which earned a spot on the 2011 Brit List (the UK version of the Black List) for writer Tess Morris. Hit the jump for more details on the promising new picture.
