There’s plenty of good stuff in today’s TV Bits, including new trailers for HBO’s Luck and Showtime’s House of Lies, which I’m hoping will help the one bit of really bad news go down a bit easier: NBC’s benching its highly praised but under-watched Community. After the jump:
- NBC puts Community on hiatus and picks up new show Legends
- HBO’s Luck, starring Dustin Hoffman and Nick Nolte, gets a trailer
- Showrunner Matthew Weiner reveals how he wants AMC’s Mad Men to end
- Showtime renews Weeds and drops a teaser for House of Lies

In almost every actor’s career there comes a time to make a clean-cut family tearjerker, and it seems that time has really come for John Krasinski, Drew Barrymore, Tim Blake Nelson, Stephen Root and many more as they take part in Big Miracle. The film finds Krasinski as a TV journalist stuck in small-town Alaska who discovers three whales trapped in the ice off the coast. Everyone with a soul, from townspeople to the big, bad Soviets, rallies to get the whales back to open water, and enough sympathetic, happy tears will probably be shed in the audience to create a new little whale habitat in every multiplex.

Saturday Night Live veteran Jason Sudeikis has been doing pretty well for himself as a movie star lately, with three separate big-screen projects in 2011 alone — Hall Pass, Horrible Bosses, and the upcoming A Good Old-Fashioned Orgy — but he hasn’t left the small screen behind quite yet. The actor has just signed on for a recurring role on the upcoming season of HBO’s baseball comedy Eastbound & Down as Shane, a new friend of former Major League pitcher Kenny Powers (Danny McBride).
The next season of Eastbound & Down will be the third and most likely final season of the series, and will premiere in early 2012. [Variety]
After the jump, Kristen Bell gains two new suitors, and Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon takes on the finance industry.

Funny folks Jeff Garlin and Mary Lynn Rajskub have signed on for Safety Not Guaranteed, which will also star Kristen Bell, Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation), Lynn Shelton (Humpday), Jenica Bergere (Rat Race), Jake Johnson (No Strings Attached), Mark Duplass, and newcomer Karan Soni. The comedy centers around “three magazine employees sent to investigate a classified ad from a man seeking a partner for time travel” and is based on an actual ad that was once featured on the Jay Leno Show.
Safety Not Guaranteed will be the first feature by Colin Trevorrow, who is directing from Derek Connolly‘s original screenplay. Big Beach Films (Little Miss Sunshine) and Duplass Brothers Productions (The Puffy Chair) are producing, which should probably give you some hint as to what kind of humor and general vibe we can expect. The film is currently shooting in Seattle. [The Hollywood Reporter]
After the jump, Hilary Swank considers co-starring with Jeremy Renner and a Silence of the Lambs parody musical hits Off Broadway.

One of my best friends ran into Kristen Bell the other day at work (things like this happen on a weekly basis living in Los Angeles). Bell apparently reads /Film and has a message for /Film readers. She hand-wrote the message on a pice of paper –

It’s that time again to present possible choices for a couple big roles in upcoming films. With Henry Cavill announced for Superman, naturally people are turning to speculation about other big roles in the film. Chief among them is Lois Lane, and there is a rumored shortlist of people who are in the running to play the intrepid reporter.
In addition, David O. Russell has mentioned a couple actresses that are of interest for the equally intrepid Elena in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Read More »
