Terrence Malick‘s new film Knight of Cups, starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett, and Antonio Banderas, premiered last night in Berlin, and as you might expect from a new Malick movie, reactions are fairly divided.
That didn’t stop distributors from showing interest, however, and Broad Green Pictures — the relatively new outfit backed by hedge fund manager Gabriel Hammond and his younger brother Daniel Hammond — picked up US rights to both Knight of Cups and the currently untitled Austin-set film which will be Malick’s next release. Along with that news comes a lovely new international poster for Knight of Cups and a bevy of reviews covering the spectrum of opinion on the movie. Check it all out after the break. Read More »

The first trailer for Knight of Cups offered some hints as to what Terrence Malick‘s latest would be about, and now an official synopsis reveals more concrete details about the story. And to the surprise of absolutely no one, it sounds very Terrence Malick-y.
Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman lead the latest from the acclaimed auteur. Get the new Knight of Cups synopsis and details after he jump. Read More »
If you’ve thought over the past couple years that Terrence Malick has been too tied to a specifically contemplative tone and aesthetic, then Knight of Cups could be a partial antidote to feelings taken out of To the Wonder and The Tree of Life. When this film was announced earlier today as one of the Berlin Film Festival selections set to premiere in February, we couldn’t tell you much more than the title and the fact that the film stars Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Christian Bale. Now we’ve got the Knight of Cups trailer, and while this is recognizable as a Malick film, it is also noticeably different than his recent work.
Sure, there’s some of the now-signature Malick aesthetic here, and that reflective voiceover. But as we see Christian Bale playing (apparently) a guy who has lost himself in easy pleasures, there’s also more overt energy here than we’ve seen in Malick’s work over the past couple decades. There’s also that glossy modern LA setting, which isn’t something we’re used to seeing from the director. Check out the trailer below. Read More »
The Terrence Malick film Knight of Cups was announced back in 2011, just months after the premiere of The Tree of Life, which at the time was his first film in six years. It has taken a few years for the film to arrive; he released To the Wonder in the meantime, and has also been working on a movie originally called Lawless, and which is currently untitled. Now the Knight of Cups premiere is now set to take place at the Berlin Film Festival in February 2015. Also premiering at the festival will be Kenneth Branagh’s Cinderella. Read More »
One classic ‘either or’ question is: would you rather have fortune, or fame? I always go for fortune, because for the most part it looks like fame really sucks. There is real power in being able to do the stuff you want to do, but still walk down the street in total anonymity.
Terrence Malick, director of films such as The Tree of Life and Days of Heaven, has always sought that sort of lifestyle — he could have given J.D. Salinger lessons in avoiding the press — and now we know he has truly achieved it. Because when he and Benecio Del Toro were out walking, TMZ caught up to them, and the tape of the encounter proves that the crew had no idea they had stumbled into a stupendously rare interview with one of the most reclusive talents of the past fifty years. After taking a hiatus for the birth of her son, Natalie Portman is gearing up to get back to work. Portman, who won Best Actress at last year’s Academy Awards, has found her first post-Oscar roles in two upcoming Terrence Malick films, Knight of Cups and Lawless. Details on the two films are still scarce, but given the combination of Malick, Portman, and her co-stars on the two projects, I’m pretty excited all the same. More details after the jump.

I don’t know what meds Terrence Malick started taking last year, but I like the result. From 1973 to 2011, the director released only five films. Now he has another four in the pipeline. Malick took years finishing The Tree of Life and is still reportedly working on the IMAX doc Voyage of Time. That latter film is new project number one.
He has already shot a film that may or may not be called The Burial, which features Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams, Javier Bardem and Rachel Weisz. That’s number two. And he has been prepping a movie with Christian Bale and newcomer Haley Bennett, which shot partially at the Austin City Limits fest in mid-September. That’s number three, and the title has been revealed as Lawless.
In addition to those, he has a fourth film on the docket, also with Bale: Knight of Cups. Details on both of those last two films are after the break. Read More »
