First Cut 2018

Now that we’ve closed the book on the year 2017, it’s time we start looking forward to what the year 2018 has in store for us on the big screen.

Just before the end of last year, we featured Final Cut 2017 with one final look back at the dozens of movies that held out attention (or at least tried to) throughout the year. Jurassic World 2 action

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom certainly has a lot to live up to in terms of box office performance. (Jurassic World is the fourth biggest movie of all time worldwide. That’s nuts, and I actually like that movie!) But putting the financial conversation aside, how will the movie fare from a creative perspective? Hardcore fans are largely thrilled with what they’ve seen so far, but I wonder how general audiences feel about the idea of a dinosaur rescue mission and a volcano threatening to blow up the island.

If it’s action you’re hoping for, it sounds like you won’t be disappointed. Fallen Kingdom director J.A. Bayona says the film contains “the biggest set-piece ever done for a Jurassic movie” and compares another action sequence to something out of a James Bond movie. But is bigger action what this franchise needs?

Jurassic World 3

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is one of several blockbuster sequels that will arrive in the summer of 2018, and it also appears to be the one which feels the most unnecessary. The first trailer for the sequel arrived earlier this month, and the reaction was less than stellar. Much like Jurassic World walked the same path as Jurassic Park, but on a larger scale, it appeared Fallen Kingdom was going to venture into the same territory as The Lost World. But that’s not the case, according to writer and producer Colin Trevorrow.

After directing Jurassic World, Colin Trevorrow is letting The Impossible helmer J.A. Bayona get behind the camera. But Trevorrow is still responsible for the script along with frequent collaborator Derek Connolly, so he has plenty of insight into what fans can expect from Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, and he says that this isn’t just a retread of The Lost World. Furthermore, it will also set up what’s to come in Jurassic World 3. Read More »

This week will bring the first trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the sequel to the 2015 reboot/sequel in the Jurassic Park franchise. Though some would argue that Jurassic World was a tad underwhelming, much like Star Wars: The Force Awakens, it delivered the right amount of nostalgia mixed with fresh elements to make it feel new again. Plus, it had been awhile since we’d gotten a decent blockbuster with dinosaurs.

Jurassic World Fallen Kingdom new dinosaurs

Universal Pictures struck box office gold with Jurassic World, which made a staggering $1.6 billion worldwide in its theatrical run. The first trailer for that film’s sequel, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, is set to arrive on Thursday, December 7, but before we catch a glimpse of what director J.A. Bayona has in store for us, some information about the movie has leaked from a new children’s book.
