And the past comes alive once again: we’ve got a brief report that Jurassic Park 4 has been given a release date by Universal. All the info available now is from THR’s Borys Kit, who says,
Deadline adds that the film will be shot in native 3D. The film will be based on the script by Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes), who were hired to write last year for producers Steven Spielberg and Kathleen Kennedy. Their draft was delivered this week, and now the search for a director is on. (With Spielberg’s Robopocalypse delayed, expect much speculation about him directing this episode. Nothing to that effect is even hinted right now, much less confirmed.) But Universal is confident enough in the process to nail down a release date, at least. We don’t have any story info yet.

The trick for any sequel is to balance the old with the new. A good one should deliver more of what made the last movie a hit, but avoid retracing too many of the exact same steps. But that order gets harder to fill as the series churns out more and more installments, each less surprising than the last. Sometimes, it starts to look like all that’s left to do is simply take the franchise in a whole new direction.
Like, say, shifting the focus from dinosaurs to terrifying human-dino hybrids in a fourth Jurassic Park movie. Or traveling back to 16th century China for The Karate Kid, Part III. Obviously, neither of those concepts actually ever came to be — but concept art from a scrapped idea for Jurassic Park IV and an interview with Karate Kid writer Robert Mark Kamen offer some insight into what could’ve been. Life finds a way, right? That can hold true for the life of film franchises, even ones that lay dormant for a decade or more.
A fourth Jurassic Park film has been a project hovering in various states of limbo since not long after the release of Joe Johnston’s Jurassic Park III in 2001. Last year Thor writer Mark Protosevich was working with Steven Spielberg to come up with ideas for a fourth film, and now Universal has taken the next step.

2011 was the biggest year ever for sequels, with a record-breaking 27 scheduled to hit theaters. And while it’s too early to say exactly how many we can expect in 2012 and beyond, judging by posts like this one it seems safe to say that the trend won’t be dying down anytime soon. After the jump:

Friendship can often be fraught with difficult negotiations. When friends are involved in creative endeavors, some disagreement and compromise is guaranteed to be in order. Take George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, who have been friends and occasional collaborators for decades. Their friendship launched the Indiana Jones film series, the last installment of which isn’t quite a fan favorite.
Even Spielberg seems to recognize that Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull isn’t such a great film, as per comments he made at a recent screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark. He even seems down on the basic story of the picture, but explains that his friendship and partnership with Lucas is what pushed it forward. At the Adventures of Tintin panel at the 2011 San Diego Comic Con, Steven Spielberg gave an update on the future of the Jurassic Park franchise. Spielberg revealed that they have come up with a story for a fourth film, and they currently have a writer working on a treatment. He enthusiastically added that “and hopefully we’ll make it in the next two or three years”.
