You might not expect a movie like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to fit in with the spirit of other holiday movies that usually get released around Christmas time, but that’s exactly what Dwayne Johnson hoped to accomplish.

In a new Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle featurette, the wrestler turned actor says, “We wanted to make a movie that encapsulates what the holiday spirit really means: the spirit of wonderment [and] discovering who you are.” Furthermore, Johnson wanted to sure that the spirit of the movie was in line with the original 1995 adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg’s beloved children’s book. Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle Trailer

The first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle introduced the core concept that is driving this combination of reboot and sequel. Yes, there is still a mystical game that puts children in harm’s way by plunging them into jungle-centric adventures. But while the original movie (and the original storybook) were based around a magical board game, the new film updates it to a video game…and goes a little Big on us by dropping the kids into adult-sized avatars shaped like Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan.

How do you go about updating Jumanji for 2017? By transforming that magical (and dangerous) board game of the title into a video game, of course. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is a sort-of sequel to Joe Johnston’s 1995 film, with Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan stepping in for Robin Williams. Since that film has its fair share of nostalgic fans, the first trailer for this sequel/reboot is surely going to undergo some scrutiny.

Robin Williams casts a large shadow on Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, the upcoming sequel to Jumanji, the 1995 adventure film for which the now-passed comedian was beloved by many a ’90s kid.

While we knew that the sequel starring Dwayne Johnson planned to pay tribute to Williams, we weren’t sure if it would be in a passing reference or line of dialogue.
