Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle Review

I may be speaking too much in haste, but I feel reasonably confident in saying that Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle is the most pure fun I’ve had at a movie in 2017. I laughed to the point that I felt compelled to apologize to my seatmates once the credits rolled, I involuntarily gasped out loud at a plot twist I probably should have seen coming, and I wasn’t bored for even a minute of the movie’s two-hour runtime. In short: Jumanji is a blast. No, it isn’t in contention with, say, The Shape of Water or The Post, but does it have to be?

You might not expect a movie like Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to fit in with the spirit of other holiday movies that usually get released around Christmas time, but that’s exactly what Dwayne Johnson hoped to accomplish.

Jumanji Welcome to the Jungle Trailer

The first trailer for Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle introduced the core concept that is driving this combination of reboot and sequel. Yes, there is still a mystical game that puts children in harm’s way by plunging them into jungle-centric adventures. But while the original movie (and the original storybook) were based around a magical board game, the new film updates it to a video game…and goes a little Big on us by dropping the kids into adult-sized avatars shaped like Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, and Karen Gillan.

If you’re 12 years old, that probably sounds pretty rad. If you’re not…well, let’s watch the new Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle trailer before we say anything else.

Since that film has its fair share of nostalgic fans, the first trailer for this sequel/reboot is surely going to undergo some scrutiny.

So let’s get the scrutinizing started.
