One of the great pleasures of cinema is watching people live out the lives of others, and therefore the biopic thrives. It isn’t enough that movies have enshrined many personalities in perpetuity; we still love seeing their lives lived again, through others.

And so we have My Week With Marilyn, a film in which Michelle Williams has the unenviable task of conjuring the presence of one of cinema’s most famous icons. She plays Marilyn in a film based on a true story about the experience one young man (played by Eddie Redmayne) had with the star. See the just-released trailer below,  and you’ll begin to get a sense of whether Williams’ version of Marilyn can be reconciled with the real thing. Read More »

Briefly: There’s been a last-minute change of plans for Zack Snyder‘s Superman film Man of Steel. Julia Ormond was originally set to play Lara Lor-Van, the biological Kryptonian mother of Superman, but for reasons unknown she will no longer be in the film. Now Ayelet Zurer (Angels & Demons, Munich) will play Superman’s mother instead, acting opposite Russell Crowe as Jor-El.

The film has been shooting for some time, as any regular peruser of /Film will know. (So…many…set videos!) Zurer’s scenes will shoot this week, according to Deadline. She’s not likely to have a great many scenes, and because most of her work is likely to be done on stages, we probably won’t get any photo evidence of the work as it is ongoing. So there’s something from the film that will remain relatively obscure until it is released.

By this point, we know a significant amount of the major casting for Man of Steel, Zack Snyder‘s reboot of the classic Superman tale: There’s Kevin Costner and Diane Lane as the Kents, Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond as Jor-El and Lara, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, and of course, Henry Cavill as Superman himself. However, one big part has remained conspicuously unfilled — until now. Laurence Fishburne has just been cast as Perry White, editor-in-chief of The Daily Planet and boss of Clark Kent. Read on after the jump.

Julia Ormond in Talks For ‘The Man of Steel’

Briefly: Zack Snyder has already got his cast to play Clark Kent’s adoptive Earthly parents in his new Superman tale, The Man of Steel. Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will be Ma and Pa Kent to Henry Cavill‘s Clark. But in his prior life on Krypton, Clark — aka Kal-el — has a set of ‘real’ parents. Russell Crowe has been offered the role of Jor-El, famously played by Marlon Brando when Richard Donner brought the story to the screen in 1978.

Now Julia Ormond is in talks to play Lara Lor-Van, aka Superman’s mom. (Susannah York played the role, often just referred to as Lara, in Superman: The Movie.) Deadline suggests that this is a deal that will come together quickly.

‘The Music Never Stopped’ Trailer

One of the films at Sundance was The Music Never Stopped, which boasts a rare leading performance from beloved character actor J.K. Simmons. The story is based on a case documented by Oliver Sacks in the story The Last Hippie (published in An Anthropologist on Mars) in which a man suffers a massive brain tumor that prevents him from remembering anything that took place after the ’60s. J.K. Simmons plays the father of the man (Lou Taylor Pucci) and the film chronicles their ongoing rehabilitation through music. Read More »
