Jay and Mark Duplass are following up their film Cyrus with Jeff Who Lives at Home, starring Jason Segel, Ed Helms, Judy Greer, and Susan Sarandon. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last September, where it was called “a lovely, nicely paced and completely heartfelt look at a complicated relationship between brothers” (CinemaBlend) and the best film yet from the Duplass brothers, which “doesn’t suddenly break your heart, but, rather, it suddenly heals it — with a moment of such delicacy and sincerity that you feel lucky to witness it.” (The Playlist)

Nicole Kidman‘s Blossom Films and Olympus Films have teamed up to acquire the movie rights for Kevin Wilson‘s bestselling book The Family Fang, which they plan to develop as a starring vehicle for Kidman. The two companies previously collaborated on Rabbit Hole, for which Kidman received a Best Actress Oscar nomination.
Wilson’s debut novel centers around a couple of performance artists who regularly incorporate their unwilling children into their bizarre acts. Years later, misfortune prompts the now-grown son and daughter to return home, where they find their parents gearing up for one final masterpiece. [Deadline]

The first trailer for The Descendants, Alexander Payne‘s first feature film as director since Sideways in 2004, set up a lot of story: George Clooney is a relatively uninvolved dad who has to step up and take care of his two daughters when his wife suffers an accident, only to learn that there are things about his wife’s life he didn’t know.
This second trailer is more of a teaser that puts the movie across as a more gentle, perhaps even quirky story than we saw in the full trailer. It tells us that the fact that the story takes place in Hawaii shouldn’t lead us to expect something cheery and easy, but then offers up a relatively cheery and easy look at the film. As we’ve said in several pieces in the past, Rian Johnson‘s third film Looper (which follows Brick and The Brothers Bloom) is one of our most anticipated pictures in the next year or so. FilmDistrict and Tri-Star are releasing the film, and we’d hoped to see it sometime early next year. Sadly, we’re going to have to wait a bit longer than that. It has been seven long years since Alexander Payne last had a film in theaters. He’s done a lot of work since Sideways, producing some films (Cedar Rapids) and television (Hung) and working to develop quite a few projects. He spent some significant time on the film Downsizing, which was shelved late in development; that’s when he jumped at making The Descendants with George Clooney. This one is right in Payne’s wheelhouse: the story of a father dealing with his two daughters after an accident leaves his wife terrible injured. While trying to get back into being a proper father, he discovers that his wife had been having an affair, and things get emotional from there.
The first trailer has landed, and fans of Alexander Payne’s previous films will probably love it. Everyone else should check it out just for a brief bit featuring Robert Forster. Read More »
FilmDistrict, the company spun off from Graham King’s GK FIlms, has been very busy at Cannes. The company has picked up distribution rights to the 3D version of Arabian Nights that we reported on a while back, starring Liam Hemsworth, as well as the Gerard Butler and Jessica Biel romcom Playing the Field.
And now that the lousy announcements are out of the way, there are these, too: FilmDistrict is teaming with TriStar to release Rian Johnson‘s film Looper (we just had the first still from that one on Friday) and Angelina Jolie‘s directorial debut, which now has the title In the Land of Blood and Honey.
