Thanks to Garry Marshall, I can’t hear of any film with a holiday for a title without a brief flash of fear that it’ll be another cringeworthy sequel to Valentine’s Day. But no, Labor Day isn’t another star-studded romcom, it’s the next picture by Jason Reitman. And if his past track record — which consists of Thank You For Smoking, Juno, Up in the Air, and Young Adult — is any indication, it’s one you’ll want to keep on your radar for the next several months.
Josh Brolin has been circling the coming-of-age drama since all the way back in 2010, with Kate Winslet signing on last summer. As the start date approaches, Reitman’s rounding out the rest of the cast with Gattlin Griffith, James Van Der Beek, and more. Hit the jump for details.

If you were hoping to see more Star Trek: The Original Series stars in J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek 2, George Takei says you’re out of luck. If you’ve been waiting to see Emma Thompson step back into her Oscar-nominated role from In the Name of the Father as real-life human rights lawyer Gareth Peirce, on the other hand, things are looking up. Well, it’s no Avengers-style bonanza, but here’s the Japanese trailer for Men in Black 3. This is mostly a recut version of the second US trailer that premiered not long ago, but it does have a few small new effects shots sprinkled into the edit here and there. Apparently, this tradition of each sequel going bigger than the last isn’t just a Hollywood thing. It seems the folks behind that Avatar-defeating Chinese softcore film 3D Sex and Zen are determined to get even wilder this time around, and they’ve figured out just the way to do it. After the jump:

At this point, given how many offers have gone out for Spike Lee‘s remake of Oldboy, and how many have come to naught, I’m wary of being convinced too early that a particular actor is going to be part of the film. But here’s a new one: Twitch, which has been at the forefront of breaking news about the remake, says that Elizabeth Olsen, of Martha Marcy May Marlene and Silent House, has been offered the film’s lead female role.
Update: Another report says Olsen is in talks for the role, and a deal is likely to be signed. We’ve also got info on her role, which sounds as if it has been slightly changed from the female lead in the South Korean film.
