So a new He-Man movie is really in development. Why? Great question. The property was never anything other than a method to pander toys — pretty weird, goofy toys, at that. Yet there is a company ready to pour millions of dollars into revitalizing a sales pitch that is best remembered by guys in the 30 to 40-year old age range. And Jon M. Chu, who made the yet-to-be-released G.I. Joe: Retaliation, is going to direct it. He spoke about his reasons for making the movie, which you can read below.

By the power of Grayskull, Sony has been trying to revive the Masters of the Universe franchise for several years. Screenwriters were hired in 2010 to take a pass at the popular story of He-Man and now talks have revved up again as Jon Chu, the director of G.I. Joe Retaliation, is in talks to direct. What’s the real story behind the delay of Paramount’s G.I. Joe: Retaliation? Ever since the studio abruptly pushed the film to March 2013, just weeks before the planned opening later this month, there have been rumors about bad test screening reactions and a studio desire for more Channing Tatum.
We know the film is being converted to 3D, and there have been suppositions that the process is simply to bolster the box office take thanks to 3D surcharges, or that the conversion is a smokescreen to cover fixing other issues with the film.
Director Jon M. Chu has been quiet through the past few weeks — it can’t be a pleasant thing to see any film you’ve worked on go through the wringer like this — and there have been stories of a lack of communication between he and Paramount. Now Chu seems to have reached out to one site, and he says that 3D is really the focus of the delay. Read More »
By and large, no one liked G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra very much, and so you can’t blame Paramount for thinking it was a good idea to craft a sequel with as few faces as possible from the original movie. And when that sequel was set in motion last year, no one would have known that thanks to Haywire, 21 Jump Street and The Vow, audiences would warm to and quickly want a lot more of Channing Tatum. The actor could have just as easily hit summer 2012 as the new Ryan Reynolds.
But things worked out so that Tatum’s popularity is at an all-time high, and Paramount has G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which… well, he’s not in the movie very much. Oops.
So while the reports of a release date delay for Retaliation were oriented around the fact that the film would be converted to 3D, the real factor may be that those reshoots we mentioned recently will actually be done to keep Tatum in the movie a lot longer. Read More »
Cinemacon delivered a new trailer for G.I. Joe: Retaliation earlier this week, and now a new international trailer features a great deal of new footage. It’s pretty much entirely big, cheesy stuff in which the betrayed Joes battle the devious forces of Cobra with high tech and charming brawn, the latter courtesy of The Rock and Bruce Willis.
But like most of the other footage from Jon M. Chu‘s sequel, it looks like it might be just as entertaining as it is fluffy. Is it possible that Chu has his the sweet spot for summer movies with this cartoonish action film? Let’s hope. Check out the new stuff below. Read More »
Let’s kick off another sequel news roundup with some info on a film that will be out soon. Jon M. Chu directed G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and the trailers released so far have generated a good level of interest in the film.
In an interview with Moviefone, Chu talks about enthusiasm for various Joe characters and the difficulty his team had with creating a linear follow-up to the first Joe film, The Rise of Cobra. One question many of our readers has asked regards Cobra Commander, and how this film’s character connects to the Joseph Gordon-Levitt version in the previous movie. Chu says, “Cobra Commander was an issue. But I know we couldn’t lose Cobra Commander.”
Asked if this is the same character under the mask, the director says,
No. [Smiling] But we figured out a way that’s pretty nice. And you get the Cobra Commander that you’ve always wanted. Or, to me, what I always wanted: a bad-ass villain. He’s one of the most iconic villains ever. I’m even following him on Twitter — he’s so funny.
After the break, a brief update on the chance of a Rambo 5, Michael Keaton is reportedly excited about a Beetlejuice sequel, and we’ve got some info on Judd Apatow’s sorta-sequel to Knocked Up, This Is 40. Read More »
If nothing else, Paramount is doing a great job selling G.I. Joe: Retaliation, which sees the return of Channing Tatum, Ray Park, Lee Byung-hun, Arnold Vosloo and Jonathan Pryce to the fold, and adds Adrianne Palicki, Ray Stevenson, RZA, D.J. Cotrona and small-timers The Rock and Bruce Willis.
The spots we’ve seen so far look great, and now here’s a new international trailer, which adds a few new Cobra-related shots and quick looks at Zartan in disguise and Ray Stevenson as Firefly. For those who’ve wondered just how this sequel will tie into the story of the first movie, this trailer might clear a few things up. (Or at least give some clues.) Check it out below. Read More »
