Director Jon M. Chu was kind of a surprising pick for G.I. Joe: Retaliation back in the day. Sure, he’d had some experience shooting action, but mostly of the dancing variety, in films like Step Up 2: The Streets, Step Up 3D, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never. Not so much the military battle kind.
Now that Retaliation‘s managed to rake in $365 million worldwide, though, Chu’s become the obvious choice to helm the follow-up. And indeed, a new report indicates that Paramount and MGM are nearing a deal with him. Hit the jump to get the details.

Now that Jon M. Chu is finally done with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, he can turn his attention to other projects. For fans, tops on that list is the He-Man reboot Masters of the Universe. Chu was revealed as the director of the film back in July 2012, but hasn’t had time to truly concentrate on it, thanks to his extra-long post-production duties on Joe. With Retaliation out in the wild, Chu uses a new interview to provide an update on Masters of the Universe. Unfortunately, that update sounds quite similar to what he said in October of last year.

In just over a week Jon M. Chu will finally see his delayed G.I. Joe: Retaliation open in theaters, which means he can truly move on to his next project. That is looking like it could be Masters of the Universe, based on the line of toys and accompanying advertisement cartoon series. Another film was once made based on the property, with Dolph Lundren starring as the alien warrior prince He-Man.
Naturally, despite the fact that no one really liked that version of Masters of the Universe when it was released, and few people like it now for anything other than a dose of kitsch, people are asking about the idea of Lundgren appearing in the new film. And because this is Hollywood, that could be enough to make it happen. Read More »

Last spring, Paramount made the surprising decision to delay G.I. Joe: Retaliation by nine months, from June 2012 to March 2013, so that it could be converted to 3D. Now, in just a couple of months, we’ll find out whether that costly last-minute change was worth it.
The latest trailer tries to hype up the new 3D with plenty of ninja-tastic action. But to really get a sense of how the whole 3D thing has worked out for Paramount and MGM you may want to buy a ticket to this weekend’s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, as it’ll screen with a four-minute 3D preview of G.I. Joe Retaliation. Read more details and watch the new promo after the jump.

In an alternate timeline where Jon M. Chu‘s G.I. Joe Retaliation wasn’t delayed to get a 3D overhaul, it would probably already be on Blu-ray. As it stands, though, the director is still working on making the conversion worth the wait. Audiences are about five months out from finally seeing some fulfillment of the action-packed promise we got when the first trailer was released in April.
A new edit of that original trailer has recently come online and while it has the exact same opening, and many of the exact same shots later on, there’s enough new stuff in there to warrant a look from any G.I. Joe fans rabidly awaiting the film.
G.I. Joe Retaliation opens March 29, 2013 and stars Dwayne Johnson, Channing Tatum, Bruce Willis, Adrianne Palicki, D.J. Cotrona, Byung-hun Lee, Ray Park, RZA, Joseph Mazzello, Elodie Yung, and Walton Goggins. Check out some new footage below. Read More »
Director Jon M. Chu has quickly become one of those directors whose quotes you need to read. After gaining notoriety with the Step Up movies and Justin Bieber documentary, Paramount entrusted him with one of their marquee franchises: G.I. Joe. Then Sony handed him the reigns to another potential franchise, Masters of the Universe. That’s a nice step up (pun intended) from dance TV shows.
In a new interview, Chu offered some significant updates on the status of G.I. Joe Retaliation, which was delayed so that (reportedly) the director could convert the film to 3D, as well as on Masters of the Universe, which is based on the popular Eighties cartoon and toy line .
