John Singleton’s ‘Tupac’ Goes to Open Road

John Singleton Tupac

A Tupac Shakur biopic has been in the works for a long, long time — so long, in fact, that it was starting to look like the film would never actually happen. But now it’s finally coming together for real, with a distributor and everything.

Open Road Films has just picked up the U.S. rights to Tupac. John Singleton is set to direct. What’s still missing is a star who can capture the late rapper’s indelible spirit. More details on the film after the jump.

John Singleton Again Set to Direct Tupac Shakur Biopic

Tupac Shakur

John Singleton has long wanted to make a biopic about the late Tupac Shakur, whom Singleton cast in Poetic Justice. In late 2011 he was set to direct the film, but he dropped out a month later, and in the years since the Tupac film has essentially stalled, with attempts to come up with a new director, script, and financing taking time to bear fruit. But last year Morgan Creek Films got Emmett/Furla/Oasis Films to commit financing, and so the film is moving forward again.

Now Singleton is once again on the film, and is planning to immediately rewrite the script with an eye on shooting this summer. Read More »

That long-gestating Tupac Shakur biopic is in need of a director once again, as John Singleton has dropped out of talks to helm. Antoine Fuqua was originally lined up to direct, but left the project due to difficulties with casting the lead role – even a nationwide talent search failed to yield any candidates who passed muster — and Singleton entered negotiations last month.

Now, with the Shakur pic off his plate, Singleton’s next project will be an untitled love story that reunites him with Baby Boy stars Tyrese Gibson and Taraji P. Henson. More after the jump.

John Singleton in Talks to Direct Tupac Shakur Biopic

It’s been some time since John Singleton made a movie that generated much excitement. (Though some Taylor Lautner fans might argue, thanks to this year’s Abduction.) But he has been looking at interesting movies in the past couple months. First he was mentioned as a possible director for Straight Outta Compton, the biopic of once-controversial rap group N.W.A — though it looks like that movie might go to Craig Brewer or another director.

But now Singleton is also being talked up as a potential director for the Tupac Shakur biopic that no one seems able to make. Antoine Fuqua was attached for some time, and production company Morgan Creek did some real work to keep him on the movie. But he couldn’t cast the lead, and Dreamworks dropped the picture, prompting Fuqua to move on to Hunter Killer. So can John Singleton succeed where Fuqua failed? Given that Singleton is one of the directors who worked with Tupac (on Poetic Justice, pictured above) he seems among the best-suited to make the movie. Read More »

Briefly: Last time we heard about the N.W.A biopic Straight Outta Compton was only days ago, when director John Singleton said that he’s been talking to former N.W.A member Ice Cube about directing the film. But he may not be the only person in line for the job.

Vulture says that F. Gary Gray, Peter Berg and Craig Brewer are all on the list at New Line. First reaction to that list is that Craig Brewer might be a great choice. Based on what I’m hearing about Footloose, he’s about to make believers out of a lot of former naysayers like myself. (I’ve been a naysayer about Footloose, that is; I’ve liked Brewer’s other films.) F. Gary Gray isn’t a compelling choice, given his very inconsistent output, and Peter Berg seems like the wild card. He could probably have the job if he wants it, and might do well with it as a break after the big-budget Battleship. Sadly, I’d be tempted to say that all three of these guys are probably a better choice than late-model Singleton. But this is the sort of story that could easily make Singleton and/or Gray step up in a big way, so I wouldn’t cross anyone off the list yet.

Will John Singleton Direct the N.W.A Movie?

If one were to assemble a shortlist of possible directors for Straight Outta Compton, the mooted N.W.A biopic, one of the obvious choices would be John Singleton. Well, the John Singleton of Boyz n the Hood, at least; perhaps not the Singleton of Abduction. If you did put Singleton high on the list to make the N.W.A. film, you wouldn’t be alone; evidently Ice Cube has approached him to make the picture. Read More »

In John Singleton‘s Abduction, Taylor Lautner gets to play out a great teen fantasy: rather than being just another good-looking high-school kid with a caring family, he’s a good-looking kid who is secretly a total badass. He’s so secretly a badass that he doesn’t even know it. That is, not until his adoptive spy parents are taken out, after which he has to go on the run to find out the truth of his own secretly amazing existence.

The first trailer was all about setting up the story and positioning Taylor Lautner as a guy who can act with his shirt on. This new follow-up trailer is much more interested in proving that there is so much action in the movie that it won’t really matter if Lautner can act or not. Check it out below. Read More »

‘Abduction’ Trailer Starring Taylor Lautner

The first trailer for Abduction, starring Twilight‘s Taylor Lautner and Snow White‘s Lily Collins, just came online courtesy of MTV. Directed by John Singleton (Boyz N The Hood), the film stars Lautner as a teenager who sees a picture of himself on a missing person’s website and is subsequently chased by a bunch of mysterious characters. The hardcore action film is set for release on September 23 and sort of looks like a blend of The Bourne Identity and Hanna rolled into The Fugitive with some high school tropes. Check out the trailer after the jump. Read More »
