Planes Fire and Rescue Ryker

For the first time in nearly a decade, 2014 won’t provide fans with a Pixar film. The closest thing is probably Planes: Fire and Rescue, the sequel to 2013′s Cars spinoff, Planes. (Disney’s Big Hero 6, out in November, is in the mix too, but there’s no trailer yet). In this sequel, Dusty (Dane Cook) is forced to leave racing and decides to go for a more noble calling, “Fire and Rescue.” However, it’ll be tough to gain the respect of his peers coming from such a pampered lifestyle.

Below, check out a brand new Planes Fire and Rescue trailer, some new characters (who are Cars, not Planes) as well as a list of new cast members including Ed Harris, Wes Studi, Fred Willard, Jerry Stiller, Erik Estrada, John Michael Higgins, Hal Holbrook, Kevin Richardson and Patrick Warburton. It opens July 18. Read More »

rapture-palooza-red-band-header

There are a whole lot of great people in Rapture-Palooza, written by Chris Matheson (Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure) and directed by Paul Middleditch (Separation City). The film features Anna Kendrick and John Francis Daley as a young couple navigating the slightly hellish landscape of Earth after the Rapture. Craig Robinson is the Antichrist, and Rob Corddry, Rob Huebel, Paul Scheer, Thomas Lennon, Ana Gasteyer, John Michael Higgins, and Tyler Labine are on hand, too.

Like I said, a lot of great people… so we’ll just pretend for a while that the film looks a lot better than this red-band trailer makes it out to be. Knowing that this was written by the guy who created Bill & Ted helps, and this trailer seems to be angling for some of that spirit, and the weirder moments of the Harold & Kumar movies, too. But a lot of Rapture-Palooza looks a bit like Birdemic, only with recognizable actors. That might be good; a lot of people seem to like Birdemic.

There’s a lot of bad language in here, which is what earns the red-band status. Whether the language adds to the jokes is something we’ll let you decide. (I do like the vulgar crow.) Read More »

Cameron Crowe seems to be really enjoying Twitter. Not only has he been replying back to fans, he’s continued to tweet photos from the set of We Bought a Zoo. Crowe’s latest is scheduled for release on December 23 and stars Matt Damon as a man whose family buys and moves to a zoo after an untimely death. It also stars Scarlett Johansson, Elle Fanning, Thomas Hayden Church, Patrick Fugit, Angus Macfadyen, John Michael Higgins and others. Several of them – and the monkey from The Hangover Part II – are in the new photos that Crowe himself took and posted online. Read More »

I’m a huge fan of director Cameron Crowe, and Almost Famous is one of my favorite films of all time. Before I started /Film, one of the websites I use to check on a regular basis was a Cameron Crowe fansite called The Uncool (which, yes, is a brilliant reference from Almost Famous). The guy who owned the blog, Greg Mariotti, you might know from another film blog called PixarTalk (he’s appeared on the /filmcast as well), sold the site years ago to Crowe himself.

Cameron brought Greg on to help with his official site, which was a cool looking flash-designed dysfunctional mess, and the blog folded. Updates became few and far between. Recently Mariotti relaunched The Uncool as a stand-alone official blog, which is allowing him to post all sorts of cool Cameron Crowe-related material. I’ve been looking for an excuse to write about the blog for the past month, and now I have one.

Today Greg posted an article titled “5 Things I Learned About We Bought a Zoo”, which includes photos and observations from visiting the California-based se of his new film, a big screen adaptation of We Bought a Zoo which stars Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson, Thomas Haden Church, John Michael Higgins, Angus MacFadyen, Patrick Fugit, and more. I’ve never been to the set of a Cameron Crowe film, so I’ll have to live vicariously through Greg’s reports… but maybe someday? Head over to TheUncool to learn about the changes that Cameron has taken from Benjamin Mee‘s book, technical details (yes, the movie is being shot on film), details on Cameron’s new partnership with Director of Photography Rodrigo Prieto and more. I’m sure he has more, which will likely be posted in future updates.

Jason Segel and John Michael Higgins are in talks to co-star in Jake Kasdan‘s Bad Teacher. The comedy stars Cameron Diaz as Elizabeth Halsey, a foul-mouthed, conniving seventh-grade teacher who is dumped by her sugar daddy, and begins to woo the school’s model teacher, and starts a bitter rivalry with his girlfriend, her squeaky-clean colleague Amy Squirrel (played by Lucy Punch).
