Zach Gilford, best known as sensitive QB Matt Saracen on Friday Night Lights, will be starring opposite Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Last Stand. Described as “a combination of Die Hard and High Noon,” the action film revolves around a border town sheriff (Schwarzenegger) who finds himself tasked with stopping a drug kingpin from crossing the U.S. border. Gilford will play one of the cops working under Schwarzenegger’s character.
The Last Stand marks the English-language debut of South Korean filmmaker Kim Ji-woon (I Saw the Devil), as well as Schwarzenegger’s return to acting. Given the kind of work that Schwarzenegger and Gilford have each done in the past, I’m having a little trouble imagining them starring next to each other. But Gilford’s a wonderful actor who deserves to get way more work than he does, so I’m just happy to see him pick up a higher-profile gig for once. The Last Stand is due out January 18, 2013. One of the weirder American monster legends is that which concerns the Jersey Devil, which originates in the 18th century, but became one of the breakout American pop-culture monsters thanks to reported sightings in the early 1900s.
Now Stephen Moyer from True Blood will star in a new film exploiting the legend: The Barrens. He’ll play a family man who, while on a camping trip in the New Jersey Pine Barrents, “becomes convinced [he and his family are] being stalked by the legendary winged monster that looks like a deformed hybrid of several different animals.” Darren Lynn Bousman wrote and will direct; the film shoots later this month in Toronto (what, not in Jersey? boo!) and will be released next fall by Anchor Bay. John Malkovich is in final talks to join the zombie romance Warm Bodies, directed by Jonathan Levine (50/50). Based on the novel by Isaac Marion, the film stars Nicholas Hoult as an angsty zombie named R who strikes up a friendship with the human girlfriend of one of his victims and sets off a chain of events that eventually affects all of zombie society. On the surface, it sounds like a pretty typical supernatural love story, but I’ve heard very good things about the book, so I’ve got high hopes that it won’t just be another Twilight.
Teresa Palmer and Rob Corddry are also set to star, as the human love interest and another zombie undergoing an existential crisis, respectively. Malkovich will be playing the villainous “General Grigio, who’s obsessed with the destruction of the zombie threat.” Oh, and he’s also Julie’s father. How awkward. [Variety]

Roland Emmerich‘s new film, the ‘who really wrote Shakespeare’s plays’ conspiracy tale Anonymous, got a little prestige bump when it was programmed as part of the Toronto International Film Festival. But let’s face it: as much as we celebrate TIFF, and with very good reason, a festival packed with hundreds of films is going to spotlight a few clunkers. Will Anonymous be one of those?
A second trailer has dropped for the picture, and it retains the Radiohead track (‘Everything in its Right Place’) that scored the first trailer, but significantly ups the silliness factor. This trailer might not give you much of an idea about the actual story in the film, but it will offer the heads-up that it is all very, very serious. Read More »
For his latest film, Anonymous, Roland Emmerich departs from his established world-busting pattern…or does he? While the film doesn’t feature scenes of overt global destruction as per 2012 and Independence Day, the movie does seek to drop a bomb on the literary world by taking seriously the conspiracy theory that says the works of William Shakespeare were in fact penned by someone else.

Hot off the success of The Social Network, director David Fincher is currently directing the American remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We already know the adaptation of the popular book by Stieg Larsson will star Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander and Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist plus Fincher just announced that actors Joely Richardson (Nip/Tuck), Steven Berkoff (A Clockwork Orange) and David Dencik, who appears in the original Swedish film, will join a cast that already includes Robin Wright Penn, Christopher Plummer and Stellan Skarsgård.
