This isn’t the sort of movie that we normally see Hugh Grant agree to make. The guy is drawn to romcoms of various stripes, with the last vaguely edgy movie he made possibly being the ’96 thriller Extreme Measures.

So it’s a big surprise — and not an unpleasant one — to see Grant booking a role in Cloud Atlas, the century-spanning, genre-hopping literary adaptation from co-writers and co-directors Tom Tykwer and Andy & Lana Wachowski. Read More »

Jim Sturgess Joins the Cast of ‘Cloud Atlas’

The latest addition to Cloud Atlas is Jim Sturgess, who is currently muddling through the film One Day opposite Anne Hathaway. The film is based on a David Mitchell novel, which is divided into six centuries-spanning tales that embody various genres from nautical adventure to sci-fi and post-apocalyptic rebirth, is quite a piece of work, tying grand stylistic playfulness to genuinely moving ideas about the interconnected nature of all our lives. It sounds like a massive undertaking, and the actor recently spoke about the possibilities of the job. Read More »

‘One Day’ Trailer

An Education director Lone Scherfig decided to follow up that film with One Day, an adaptation of the novel by David Nicholls (he also scripted) in which a young couple spends their college graduation night together, and then we see their relationship/friendship evolve over the following years by sampling one day each year. So there’s a long timeline that theoretically allows a lot of interplay between the characters, and an opportunity to portray quite a few different pop-culture eras. It’s When Harry Met Sally and Friends With Benefits and Same Time, Next Year all in one.

Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess star with support from Patricia Clarkson, Romola Garai and Jodie Whittaker. The trailer is out now; it lurks after the break, bumming me out. Read More »

In London, a new film called Ashes has pulled together an impressive core trio: Ray Winstone, Jim Sturgess and Lesley Manville. The film also features Jodie Whittaker (who’ll be a lot more known once people have a chance to see Attack the Block) and Luke Evans, and will be directed by Mat Whitecross.

We don’t have many plot details, but the script, by the director and Paul Viragh (the two also did the Ian Dury biopic Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll, starring Andy Serkis) is described as a ‘contemporary noir thriller.’ Good enough for me, especially with that cast. It’s a relatively low-budget affair ($8m), with part of the money coming from Coldplay. Yeah, that Coldplay. The film will begin shooting next week on the Isle of Man.[Variety]

Speaking of Attack the Block, one of the companies behind that movie is assembling another UK genre picture, called Cockneys Vs. Zombies. Details on that are after the break. Read More »

Good news for fans of director Tom McCarthy (The Station Agent, The Visitor, Game of Thrones), as his new film Win Win will open on March 18 instead of March 25. The film stars Paul Giamatti as “Mike Flaherty, a senior-care attorney and high-school wrestling coach in small-town New Jersey, he compromises his ethics to better support his family — with consequences, of course.” Amy Ryan, Burt Young (Rocky) and newcomer Alex Shaffer also appear. [USA Today]

After the break, a new date for Lone Scherfig’s One Day, as well as the release date and some recap info on Tarsem Singh’s Immortals. Read More »

A man and a woman fall in love but are separated by two different dimensions. No, it’s not only plot to The Lake House, it’s also the plot to Upside Down, the topsy turvy sci-fi romance written and directed by Juan Diego Solanas, which stars Jim Sturgess and Kirsten Dunst. The pair were officially cast in the film way back in October of 2009 and over the summer, we posted a short set visit video. But now, thanks to a French website, we have a look at both some poster concept art as well as the star-crossed lovers on camera. Check them out and read more about this movie – which sounds about one million times cooler than The Lake House – after the break. Read More »

Focus Features has dropped new images from two of the company’s more promising 2011 films: Lone Scherfig‘s One Day and Cary Fukunaga‘s Jane Eyre.

That’s the new Jane Eyre image, above, showing Mia Wasikowska and Michael Fassbender as the lead characters of Charlotte Brontë‘s famous novel. We’ve seen one trailer already (and it was pretty wonderful, check it if you missed that post) but this image is notable for showing the characters in a serene, even tender moment.

Get more info on Jane Eyre and see the images from One Day, after the break. Read More »
