David O. Russell‘s American Hustle features one of the most promising ensemble casts of any film this year, but the first batch of character posters splits everyone up. All the better to give each A-list star their own space to shine, I guess. Hit the jump to see Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner decked out in their best ’70s garb.

The first three Bourne films, starring Matt Damon, were the first stage of what Universal would like to be an ongoing and continually lucrative series. The fourth film, written and directed by Tony Gilroy and starring Jeremy Renner as another chemically engineered super-spy (chems? Chems. CHEMS!) moved the story forward a bit, but wasn’t a runaway hit.
Universal has been developing a fifth film, and for a few years there have been hints that Matt Damon might be recruited to co-star in a “crossover” film that would put him in the same film with Renner’s character. That eventuality may be closer than we thought, as Damon is now rumored to be in early talks to return to the fold.
Update: Universal has denied the report. Variety has the denial.

Briefly: Jeremy Renner‘s first turn as the lead of a Bourne film wasn’t quite as well-received as the first three films with Matt Damon, but that hasn’t stalled the series. Universal is now moving on a fifth film in the franchise to follow the 2012 release The Bourne Legacy, with Renner again in the lead.
Deadline reports that Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) has been hired to script a story that will feature Renner’s Aaron Cross as the lead. There’s no real hint as to the storyline, and at this point it still seems unlikely that Matt Damon will reprise the role of Jason Bourne in any significant capacity. Also uncertain at this point is the choice to direct; while Tony Gilroy scripted earlier Bourne chapters and directed Renner in The Bourne Legacy, he’s not locked to return.

As we’ve seen in earlier stills, David O. Russell‘s American Hustle features some very good actors with some very bad haircuts. Now we finally have our first look at all of them in action with the first trailer.
Starring The Fighter‘s Christian Bale and Amy Adams with The Silver Linings Playbook‘s Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the film follows the Abscam FBI sting of the 1970s, which ensnared everyone from mobsters to politicians. Watch the trailer after the jump.

Two pretty big rumors regarding The Avengers 2 are whipping around the Web today, so we figured they were worth a look. The first one seems most plausible. It concerns the possible inclusion of the Black Panther in the sequel and the hint comes from the chairman of South Africa’s Cape Town Film Studios. He said Marvel has been in contact about filming the Joss Whedon sequel there.
The second rumor is that Hawkeye could be recast. Jeremy Renner played the character in Thor as well as The Avengers, but citing a lack of activity in Phase Two and his negative comments about his role in The Avengers, one source believes the character could become the next War Machine or Hulk. Hollywood is bound to run out of good fairy tales to adapt sooner or later, but of course even that doesn’t have to spell the end of the fairy tale reimagining trend. As long as sequels are still a thing, each one of these adaptations can be stretched out into a franchise. And that’s precisely what’s happening with one that opened earlier this year.
Despite a talented cast and an outrageous premise, Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters failed to make much of an impression in the U.S. when it hit theaters two months ago. But it’s had much better success overseas, and as of today has earned a worldwide total of $205 million, or four times its $50 million budget. So you can probably guess where this is headed next. Paramount has just announced that it is pushing ahead with a Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters sequel. Hit the jump for more info.

Cool Posts From Around the Web:
Director Antoine Fuqua has been developing a boxing drama named Southpaw for some time. Written by Kurt Sutter (Sons of Anarchy) it’s the story of a left-handed boxing champion whose life is destroyed and he’s forced to fight his way back. Eminem had long been attached to star as the fighter, but when DreamWorks dropped the film that casting became less likely. MGM then scooped up the rights to Southpaw but Fuqua went off to make Olympus Has Fallen.
With that film in theaters later this month, Fuqua’s attention once again shifts to Southpaw. Eminem will still be involved in some way, but odds are he won’t star. To fill the lead role, Fuqua said he’s recently spoken to three of the most popular leading men around: Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Renner. Read More »
