Bourne Legacy Jeremy Renner

Can you believe it? Yet another franchise sequel has been set for the summer of 2015. This time it’s the as-yet-untitled fifth Bourne film, directed by Justin Lin and starring Jeremy Renner. Universal also dated Luc Besson‘s thriller, Lucy, starring Scarlett Johansson as a trained killer; read more about both below.

Justin Lin

Briefly: Justin Lin is going from fast and furious cars to fast and furious fists. The director has just signed on to direct the next Bourne movie, which will follow Aaron Cross (Jeremy Renner) in a story written by Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes). Universal is hoping for a summer 2015 release. [Deadline]

immigrant-french-trailer-header

This looks promising. The Immigrant is James Gray‘s latest film, which debuted at Cannes to generally positive reviews. And no wonder: the film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Marion Cotillard and Jeremy Renner in a love triangle of sorts, as Phoenix “helps” Cotillard as she immigrates to the US in the 1920, then traps her in a life of prostitution. Renner plays Phoenix’s cousin, and the man who could set her free. Sure, that’s a pretty hoary old story, but with the talent involved it still has appeal. And coming from Gray (and cinematographer Darius Khondji) I’d expect more out of it than the basic description suggests.

Note: this trailer is not safe for work, due to some nudity. Read More »

american_hustle_cast

David O. Russell has reunited with his Silver Linings Playbook stars Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper for American Hustle, which tells the story of a scam operation run by the FBI in the ’70s. The film also features actors such as Christian Bale and Amy Adams (who worked with Russell on The Fighter).

The first teaser trailer sold the fun of watching them all decked out in period garb, lying, stealing, screwing, and scamming, with Led Zeppelin scoring the action, and probably costing more than Russell’s first couple films in the process.

This new trailer gives you a lot more to chew on, with Christian Bale’s character setting the scene and then dialogue from each of the major characters to establish each, and how they’re relating to and messing up each other. By the end you’ll have some idea of what American Hustle is all about, and you’ll probably want to see a lot more. Check out the trailer below. Read More »

American Hustle

David O. Russell‘s American Hustle features one of the most promising ensemble casts of any film this year, but the first batch of character posters splits everyone up. All the better to give each A-list star their own space to shine, I guess. Hit the jump to see Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Amy Adams, Jennifer Lawrence, and Jeremy Renner decked out in their best ’70s garb.

bourne ultimatum

The first three Bourne films, starring Matt Damon, were the first stage of what Universal would like to be an ongoing and continually lucrative series. The fourth film, written and directed by Tony Gilroy and starring Jeremy Renner as another chemically engineered super-spy (chems? Chems. CHEMS!) moved the story forward a bit, but wasn’t a runaway hit.

Universal has been developing a fifth film, and for a few years there have been hints that Matt Damon might be recruited to co-star in a “crossover” film that would put him in the same film with Renner’s character. That eventuality may be closer than we thought, as Damon is now rumored to be in early talks to return to the fold.

Update: Universal has denied the report. Variety has the denial.

Bourne Legacy

Briefly: Jeremy Renner‘s first turn as the lead of a Bourne film wasn’t quite as well-received as the first three films with Matt Damon, but that hasn’t stalled the series. Universal is now moving on a fifth film in the franchise to follow the 2012 release The Bourne Legacy, with Renner again in the lead.

Deadline reports that Anthony Peckham (Sherlock Holmes) has been hired to script a story that will feature Renner’s Aaron Cross as the lead. There’s no real hint as to the storyline, and at this point it still seems unlikely that Matt Damon will reprise the role of Jason Bourne in any significant capacity. Also uncertain at this point is the choice to direct; while Tony Gilroy scripted earlier Bourne chapters and directed Renner in The Bourne Legacy, he’s not locked to return.

American Hustle

As we’ve seen in earlier stills, David O. Russell‘s American Hustle features some very good actors with some very bad haircuts. Now we finally have our first look at all of them in action with the first trailer.

Starring The Fighter‘s Christian Bale and Amy Adams with The Silver Linings Playbook‘s Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, the film follows the Abscam FBI sting of the 1970s, which ensnared everyone from mobsters to politicians. Watch the trailer after the jump.
