The fairy tale trend continues in full swing in 2013, with Tommy Wirkola‘s Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters kicking things off later this month. Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton star as the titular siblings, now all grown up and exterminating witches for profit. (Though, as Gretel mordantly notes, “we’d do this shit for free.”)

Earlier trailers have showcased the dark side of witch hunting and the twisted sense of humor that comes with it. The latest red-band connect some dots by laying out the plot and delving into the siblings’ sad past. Famke Janssen, Peter Stormare, and Zoe Bell also star. Watch it after the jump.

2012 saw a couple of high-profile fairy tale releases, but the trend is really just getting started. 2013 has a couple such titles due out in just the first three months, including Tommy Wirkola‘s Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters in January and Bryan Singer‘s Jack the Giant Slayer in March.

Of course, that’s not to say there aren’t promising non-fantasy movies due out as well. One we’re especially looking forward to is Side EffectsSteven Soderbergh‘s possibly final theatrical release. Check out new posters for all three films after the jump.

Jeremy Renner hosted Saturday Night Live this week and, considering he was a part of the year’s most successful film, the subject obviously came up. I’m talking about The Avengers, and SNL went all out, dressing cast members as all of the main characters: Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Maria Hill. They even dressed Bobby Moynihan as the Hulk. Renner suited up as Hawkeye and brought up an issue many of us were thinking about during Joss Whedon‘s film. Check out the funny skit below. Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have developed quite a good working relationship. Before the writer/director was responsible for the script and direction of Cruise’s upcoming Jack Reacher, he wrote the star vehicle Valkyrie, and after making Jack Reacher did script work on Cruise’s All You Need is Kill, and on Top Gun 2 before it went on hiatus.

Now McQuarrie is reported as the likely director for Mission: Impossible 5, which is as yet without a script, but stands as a big priority for Paramount. Read More »

The very title of Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters suggests a very self-consciously silly good time, as does the involvement of director Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow). So one of the disappointing aspects of the first trailer was how seriously it seemed to take the concept. Though star Jeremy Renner got to toss off a few witticisms, for the most part it seemed invested in showing us how dark the world of witch-hunting could be.

In contrast, the latest trailer seems to have a much better sense of humor. Taking full advantage of its red-band status, it gleefully dishes up blood and gore and even a healthy smattering of sexuality. Remember when Hansel suggested cutting off witches’ heads in the last trailer? The new one shows us just what that action looks like. Gemma Arterton and Famke Janssen also star. Check out the NSFW video after the jump.

David O. Russell and The Fighter were good to Christian Bale — they gave the actor a chance to really dig deep into a role rich with dramatic potential, and he took home an Oscar for it. Now Bale is going back to work for Russell, in the film once called American Bullshit, which is working without a title for now.

Bale joins Bradley Cooper, fellow Fighter vet Amy Adams, and Jeremy Renner in the film, which is based on a true story of a con man recruited to take down other con men. Read More »

Last year Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton starred as adult versions of Hansel and Gretel in a film called Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters, directed by Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow). The movie has been delayed a couple times, but is finally set to open in January, thanks to Jeremy Renner’s increased profile post-Avengers and Bourne.

The first trailer for the movie has been released, and it looks a little bit like Army of Darkness, and a little bit like the old Japanese action/comedy/splatterfest Versus, thanks to the fact that much of the action takes place in nondescript forests. And then, as many people surmised based on the premise and early photo, it also has a lot of Terry Gilliam’s Brothers Grimm spirit. That, being Gilliam’s dodgiest film, isn’t necessarily a good thing.

Check out the trailer below. (Update: We’ve added the official embed from Paramount, which comes without the subtitles.) Read More »
