We’re still in the grey zone with respect to real news about the next James Bond film. Rumored to be called Skyfall, we’re still just calling it Bond 23 for now. There will be a press conference early next month to announce the beginning of production, at which point we’ll likely get a batch of official info.
But for now, we’ll take a statement from Javier Bardem confirming that he’s playing the bad guy in the movie. (Or one of the bad guys, at least.) Along with that confirmation, there are confirmations that French actress Berenice Marlohe will be in the film, as will Ben Whishaw (who is shooting the Tykwer/Wahcowski Cloud Atlas right now) and Harry Potter‘s Helen McCrory.

An Oscar-winner known for calling people “Friend-O” could soon be playing an animated character name “El Macho.” Javier Bardem, best known for his villainous turn in the Coen Brothers’ No Country For Old Men is in negotiations to voice the bad guy in Despicable Me 2, the 3D animated sequel to the 2010 hit starring Steve Carell. That first film was about a wannabe super-villain named Cru who became a hero because bonded with three little kids and this one will continue the adventure as Cru and his family go up against El Macho and his son, Machito. Confirmed details on Sam Mendes‘ Bond 23 are still scarce, but it seems screenwriter John Logan may have let slip a very useful detail about the villain. At a talk earlier this week, Logan hinted that iconic Bond baddie Ernst Stavro Blofeld just might be making an appearance in the upcoming film. Logan didn’t go so far as to actually announce anything, but hey, until we have a better idea of the plot, we’re gonna sit here and read into every dubious crumb of information that gets out. Here’s a bit of wild speculation about Bond 23 — or possibly not so wild, depending upon how much faith you place in various online translations and reports. Hint: in this case, be cautious. But let’s lay out the steps that have lead some to suspect that the twenty-third James Bond film may be based in part on the most recent Bond novel, and share with it the rather awkward title Carte Blanche. The boys at Imagine Entertainment aren’t going to let Universal’s brush-off get them down. Not long ago, Universal opted not to fund an adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel series The Dark Tower, which was planned to encompass three feature films and at least two short connective television series. Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman make up the trio that have been trying to assemble the project, and, as intimated by King when Universal turned away, they’re not giving up.
Javier Bardem remains attached to play Roland Deschain in the features. And one venue for the TV aspect of the project could end up being Netflix. Read More »
We haven’t had a lot of real news about the Sam Mendes-directed Bond 23 since the release dates were confirmed, but here’s a nice batch of confirmations and one new bit of info. Javier Bardem and Ralph Fiennes, the former heavily tipped for a role (going so far as to reveal that he would be the villain if cast) and the latter rumored for some time, both seem to be confirmed for the film. And Miss Moneypenny, a staple Bond character who hasn’t been seen since the Pierce Brosnan films, will make an appearance as well, played by Naomie Harris. Read More »
Whatever you think of the grand career sweep of the creative team, Imagine Entertainment and, in particular, Ron Howard, Brian Grazer and Akiva Goldsman are trying something pretty outrageous with their adaptation of Stephen King‘s novel series The Dark Tower. Set to span three films and two limited TV series, with an offshoot game or two to add additional flavor, there’s nothing quite like it on the drawing boards anywhere else.
Javier Bardem is provisionally cast as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain, but Universal wanted a bit of a budget reduction, and the schedule was pushed back. Briefly: Daniel Craig is all over the place this week thanks to the new posters and trailers for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, but he is still the star of another massive franchise with a global fanbase. Today there is a tiny bit of James Bond news, as Sony, EON Productions and MGM have announced a pair of release dates for the twenty-third Bond film. The as-yet untitled movie, just Bond 23 for now, will hit the UK and Ireland on October 26, 2012, and then open in the rest of the world on November 9, 2012. The worldwide date is about when we expected to see the film; the earlier date is just a bonus for those in Britain.
We know very little about the film at this point. Daniel Craig will return as James Bond, under the direction of Sam Mendes. The screenplay is by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan. Javier Bardem could end up in the film, and Judi Dench will very likely return. Beyond that, it’s almost all up in the air.
