It seems like Jeremy Renner‘s been up for every juicy role in Hollywood these past couple of years, but apparently even he’s no match for Javier Bardem. Both went up last month for Ridley Scott‘s Cormac McCarthy-scripted thriller The Counselor, with Bardem said to be the preferred choice, and indeed, the Spanish star has now officially sealed the deal. Also just locked is Brad Pitt, who was first rumored for the picture a few weeks ago. The pair join lead Michael Fassbender, who — despite all the A-list interest in Scott’s latest project — was the only confirmed star up to this point.

Meanwhile, it’s looking increasingly likely that Pitt’s Mr. and Mrs. Smith co-star / real-life partner Angelina Jolie will board the cast as well, in a more significant role than we previously suspected. More details after the jump.

‘Skyfall’ Set Visit Preview and Four New Photos

Over the past few days I’ve been in London, and west of the city in Iver Heath. In that small village is the renowned Pinewood Studios, home of the 007 Stage. The occasion was a visit to that massive stage to see a bit of the twenty-third James Bond film, Skyfall, in action, and to spend time talking to Daniel Craig, Judi Dench, Javier Bardem, Berenice Marlohe, and some of the producers and crew.

Information about the film’s characters and story remains tightly controlled, but we did see a few notable things: preparations for and the beginning of the execution of a setpiece involving a confrontation between James Bond (Craig) and the villain Silva (Bardem) that is partially resolved through the intervention of a crashing London Tube train. We saw the construction of a stunning Shanghai casino set, and the remnants of an impressive deserted town meant to be on an island off the coast of Japan.

After the break, see three more new images from Skyfall, and be on the lookout for our full set report next week. Read More »

Fittingly for Stephen King‘s long, winding novel series The Dark Tower, the road to the screen for the property has been a weird and bumpy one. Conceived by Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer as a very ambitious adaptation that would involve three films and two connective television mini-series, the adaptation was originally housed at Universal, thanks to the company’s deal with Grazer and Howard’s Imagine Entertainment.

But Universal balked at the cost of the project, and so Imagine went shopping with The Dark Tower, which has had Javier Bardem attached to star as the Gunslinger, Roland Deschain.

Now it looks like Warner Bros., which has already been planning a multi-film adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand, is likely to pick up The Dark Tower. But will any of the project’s ambition change? Read More »

Though Skyfall stars some familiar faces, including Judi Dench and, of course, Daniel Craig, the cast list also includes many more that we don’t know so much about. Some fresh info has just dropped on some of those franchise newcomers — the characters played by Javier Bardem, Naomie Harris, and Ola Rapace, to be specific. After the jump, check out new photos of Bardem in villain mode, and read up on details about what Harris and Rapace will be doing in the film.

How wild will it be if Javier Bardem plays the villain in another tense drug-related thriller cooked up by author Cormac McCarthy? The writer recently sold a screenplay called The Counselor, which Ridley Scott will bring to the screen with Michael Fassbender playing an attorney who tries to get into the drug trade just a little bit, only to find himself in deep trouble.

Now Bardem and Jeremy Renner are reportedly the last men standing in competition to be the movie’s bad guy, with Bardem favored by Scott. And Natalie Portman is looking like Scott’s choice to play the fiancee of the lead character. Read More »

There’s been a very steady stream of casting updates lately, thanks in a large part to the Sundance Film Festival, but today we have news of two roles that didn’t quite work out as planned. Demi Moore, who was slated to play Gloria Steinem in Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman‘s porn biopic Lovelace, has since pulled out of the project, while Javier Bardem has dropped out of negotiations to voice the villain of Universal’s Despicable Me 2. More details after the jump.

After months — years, really — of rumors about the next James Bond film, it’s nice to finally have some actual facts to sink our teeth into. As shooting on the film began today, director Sam Mendes, his producers, and several of his stars held a press conference giving away some tidibts about the film we’ve been referring to as Bond 23.
